A Journey into the Rain Forest By: Joe and Angela

What is a Rain Forest? A rain forest is a group of plants and animals combined together to create an incredible environment. A rain forest gets 210 feet of rain a year.

Location of Rain Forests The tropics is a place that is close to the equator. The Amazon rain forest is the biggest Rain forest. The Amazon Rain forest is located in South America. Australia and Africa both only have two rain forests.

Emergent Layer This layer is the highest layer. There are mostly birds in this layer. This layer gets the most sun. Some monkeys live in this layer. A sloth probably wouldn’t live up here, but sometimes they do.

Canopy Layer Most plants and animals live in this layer. There are butterflies and frogs. There are many plants like Drip tips and lianas. There are many animals too, like the three-toed sloth. Many bugs live in this layer like beetles and bees. This layer is the second to the top layer.

Understory Layer This layer has many plants and animals. There are two plants that we know of a Rose periwinkle and the Bromeliad. Jaguars, geckos, and parrots all live in this layer. This layer is second to the bottom layer.

Forest Floor This layer is the bottom layer. Giant ant eaters, worms, and snakes live on this layer. A shade lover, forest fungi, and trapping lights, all live on this layer. Also burrowing worms and browsing birds, both live in this layer.

Deforestation Many people destroy rain forests to build houses and wooden floors. When people destroy trees they destroy at least 50 animals home. First they cut down all the trees and plants. Then the farmers plant their crops in the ashy ground.

People of the Rain Forest Today about 200 million people live in the rain forest. Most people of the rain forest live deep inside the rain forest. Many of the people in the rain forest are from ancient tribes.

How We Can Help Many people help save the rain forests. We can help by not buying things made by things in the rain forest. Don’t pollute because the stuff flows into the rain forest’s water.
