Conduction & Thermal Energy

What is CONDUCTION? Conduction is the passing of energy from one atom to another. When conduction takes place, one atom gains energy while another loses energy. If matter is passing energy from atom to atom, they are conducting energy.

What is ENERGY? Energy is the ability to make matter move. Energy is not matter – it does not take up space or have mass. There are several different types of energy: electrical, light, sound, and thermal are some examples.

What is THERMAL ENERGY? Thermal Energy is the energy that all atoms have that keeps them moving or vibrating. The atoms that make you lab table has thermal energy even though you can’t see or feel these atoms moving.

What is THERMAL ENERGY? You may notice thermal energy as heat rather than movement. When something has more thermal energy than the atoms that make your hand, it feels hotter to the touch. If something feels cold, it has less thermal energy.

What is THERMAL ENERGY? Matter tends to want to get rid of thermal energy to other atoms that have less of it. Your hand has more thermal energy than your table, so if you place your hand down it feels cold. This is because your hand is giving some of its thermal energy to the table.

What is THERMAL ENERGY?

What is TEMPERATURE? Temperature is a measurement of how much thermal energy matter has. temperature = thermal energy

What is TEMPERATURE? If a thermometer changes its reading, then thermal energy is being conducted temperature = gaining energy temperature = giving energy

What matter CONDUCTS BETTER? Of all the matter that exists, metals are the best conductors. This means that atoms that are of metal elements give or take thermal energy from other atoms more easily. Think about a wire – it is made from metal so that the electric energy can get to its destination easily.

What matter CONDUCTS BETTER? If matter changes its temperature easily, there is a good chance that it is composed of metals. This is because it is transferring the thermal energy easily and is therefore conducting.

What matter CONDUCTS BETTER? Consider a metal bar. Place one end near a flame and hold the other end. What do you feel? Place one end of the metal bar in a pile of snow and hold the other end. What do you feel? How is this demonstrating good conduction?

What matter CONDUCTS BETTER? Consider a sock. Place one end near a flame and hold the other end. What do you feel? Place one end of the sock in a pile of snow and hold the other end. What do you feel? How is this demonstrating poor conduction?

Conductivity in NONMETALS Why are potholders usually made from nonmetals?
