Vanderbilt University Toshiba IR Test Apparatus Project Final Design Review Ahmad Nazri Fadzal Zamir Izam Nurfazlina Kamaruddin Wan Othman

Problem  Toshiba’s goal is to achieve 100% test coverage on all projects. For this TV, some test coverage was missing in the IR blasting area

Definition of need  Create a test program that can verify the TV is outputting the correct IR signals to devices that are connected through IR blaster cable

Toshiba H93 Digital Integrated TV  a new model HDTV  uses infrared blaster outputs  Uses one remote to control all the devices that are connected to TV

Signal Flow  Remote control sends signal to TV  TV sends electric signal to IR blaster  For this project, we are going to test the signal from TV to other devices IR Blasting area

GLINK  Use to connect cable box and VCR

TheaterNet  Use to connect DVD player

Approach  Set up connection from TV to CPU through IR cable  Design a program that has two modes: - Creating database - Testing mode

Short descriptions

Signal flow from TV to devices

Specification Creating Database The output signals from the television will be analyzed and their characteristics will be stored in a reasonably compact manner  Sampling  Sample at least 4 different brands of DVD and VCR signals  Analyze  Analyze characteristics of signals and known signals will be created  Operator will take sampling signals and store in database  A ‘name’ will be designated for each particular signal

Specification (continued)  Storage  Operator will take sampling signals and store in database  A ‘name’ will be designated for each particular signal  Search capability  Be able to access signals in database

Specification (Continued)  Testing Mode  Program will instruct user to drive the TV using remote control  The program will analyze the signals and compare them with signals from database  The program then will log pass/fail result to user interface and text file.

Specification (continued)  The program will also display the statistics of the test signal comparing with the known signal in the database  Signal length  Position where errors occur  Type of error  Display statistic in table  Graphical display of expected versus failed infrared signal pulse train.

Test Model

Apparatus  Toshiba H93 Digital Integrated TV  Data acquisition board  Programming language software  PC

Data Acquisition Device (DAQ)  Function:  Gathers information in an automated fashion from analog and digital measurement sources.  Uses a combination of PC- based measurement hardware and software to provide a flexible, user- defined measurement system  Converts analog signal to digital patterns signal

Data acquisition board NI PCI 6534NI PCI 6533 -High-Speed Digital I/O device -Start and Stop Trigger -compatibly with C++ -20MHz maximum transfer rate -clock rate of 20MHz -price $1700 -High-Speed Digital I/O device -Start and Stop Trigger -compatibly with C++ -Up to 2MHz maximum transfer rate -clock rate of 5MHz -price $1000

NI PCI 6533  National Instruments Data Acquisition Device  Model: NI PCI-6533 (DIO-32HS) High Speed Pattern I/O and Handshaking  2 MHz maximum transfer rate  32 digital input output lines  8, 16 or 32 bits transfers  Start and Stop triggering, pattern and change detection  32 MB onboard memory per data path  NI-DAQ driver included

Software AdvantageDisadvantage LabView -recommended software for DAQ board -no basic knowledge -expensive ($2000) Visual basic -compatible software for DAQ -cheap -no basic knowledge Visual C++ -basic knowledge -compatible software for DAQ -cheap -none

PC specifications  PC  Brand: ACER  Operating System: Windows 2000/NT/XP  20 GHz Intel Pentium IV  RAM: 128 MB RAM  4x CD-ROM drive  1 GB free hard disk space

IR Signal  Encode Type – pulse width, space width, and phase/shift.

IR Signal (continued)

IR Signal pulse study  Objective: Learn actual IR signals output from the TV to the devices  Selected DVD brands:  Toshiba  JVC  Selected functions:  STOP  PLAY
