8. Essay prompt example: WWU Instructions: Most essay responses are about 500 words, but this is only a recommendation, not a firm limit. Feel free to take what space is necessary for you to tell your story. Choose from one of the following: Option 1: Share a meaningful experience and how this has helped shape you in your preparation for college – this could be related to your passions, commitments, leadership experience, family or cultural background. Option 2: Describe any activities you have been involved in related to diversity or multiculturalism and explain how you will actively contribute to a diverse campus community at Western.

9. Admissions: Tips for an excellent application Follow the directions! Answer the question that is being asked. Make sure at least one person reviews the application (including essay) before hitting “Submit” Plan ahead and know your deadlines: Give 2-3 weeks for your counselor/teacher to write a letter of recommendation if needed The Common Application (required by many private schools) includes a Counselor Component – need to give us up to 2 weeks to complete!

14. Financial Aid Apply online at: www.fafsa.ed.gov www.fafsa.ed.gov Create a PIN (personal identification number) before Jan 1. File your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) after January 1 st. Use your previous year’s tax return info and then update later File early! More aid is available earlier in the year College Bound Scholarship FAFSA deadline is Feb. 1 st Many school scholarships have a FAFSA priority deadline of Feb. 1 st.

16. Benefits of a Community College Annual tuition at a community college for 2015-2016: $4,614 (full-time, 3 quarters) Want smaller classes? Complete an AA degree then transfer Interested in a specialized degree? (nursing, computer programming, aviation, etc.) Don’t have the core classes needed for a four-year university – or the GPA?

17. Technical Colleges Excellent for pursuing a vocation immediately out of high school Visit the programs you’re interested in Apply for programs early: January of Senior is encouraged ◦Just about every program this year had a waitli!st

18. Community and technical colleges – how to apply: 1. Visit websites and look under “Freshman Admissions” or “Prospective students”. Start applying January of senior year. 2. Find out what is required – application fee? Transcript? Compass test? Usually you will complete the application, pay the fee, take a Compass test, then register for classes. No SAT or ACT is required. 3. Submit application and fee, then schedule Compass test. You’re ready to register for classes!
