Student Behaviors Be prompt  Be ready to learn when class begins. See the small whiteboard at the front of class for what is needed and what will be covered on any given day. Be prepared  Have materials with you and know due dates for assignments. Be a polite and positive participant  Speak in a normal tone of voice, and listen attentively to whomever is speaking. Listen to hear, don’t listen to respond, and please don’t interrupt others or monopolize conversations. Also, please raise your hand!

Student Behaviors Be productive  Turn in work on time, and always do your best. The more work you complete in class, the less work you will have to take home with you! Be a problem solver  Correct problems that occur quickly and peacefully before they escalate.

Student Behaviors Be an active participant and learner  Keep cell phones put away and on mute or off  Keep iPods/mp3 players put away, as well as headphones and ear buds  Sit up and pay attention; there is no sleeping in this class  Participate, ask questions, listen to the points of view of others, and contribute your relevant thoughts.  Raise your hand to contribute your thoughts so everyone has the chance to participate.  Be prepared for class; everyone gets called on in class, whether his/her hand is up or not!

Show Respect Value yourself. Be honest and ethical, and practice strong moral values. Know the school rules and uphold them. Don’t bully each other. I have zero-tolerance for this. We are all different, and this is what make us special and unique. Treat all members of the school community and all visitors with politeness and respect. Honor the ideas and opinions of others. Offer to help. Be responsible with property and belongings. Use appropriate language.

Responsibility for Coursework You should have your notebook and supplies in class with you every day, especially since I provide you with a place to keep them. It is not my responsibility or the responsibility of your classmates to provide these things for you. Know due dates, and submit all coursework on time. Ask if you are unsure. All assignments are posted on the bulletin board and are available in the make up folder. They are also available on the class Web site, as are class handouts and copies of notes (if you are absent): http://whiteboard.polaris.edu/dlkollar http://whiteboard.polaris.edu/dlkollar

Responsibility for Coursework Make sure your AUP is signed and turned in so you can use the laptops!  Some assignments can only be completed on the laptops/school computers, and some books are only available on the school tablets, so please don’t wait on this!

Policies Food and beverages are not allowed in the classroom. The one exception is water, though it is not permitted near the laptops. Please be in your seat when the bell rings, as class begins at that time. If you are not in class, you will have to go back downstairs for a pass Turn your work in to the appropriate location (NOT my desk).

Policies Employability Points  This is based on your ability and choice to work in a given day  To earn these points you must: Be in attendance (If you are absent, excused or not, you aren’t able to work with us today) Be on time Complete your assignments Be prepared for class with your OWN supplies when the bell rings Participate! Basically do what is expected of you during class.  Employability Points are worth 10 points during 90 minute classes and 5 points during 40 minute classes. They are 15% of your grade.

Policies Absences  See the side board for what you missed  Make up assignments are in the folder.  You have the number of days you are absent to make up your work.*  You CANNOT make up employability points when you are absent! *Days are actual school days, not class days. I am here every day, just as you are, and you can bring me missed work any day of the week.

Grading Grades are based on the accumulation of points. Points are based on:  Employability points (effort—15%)  Homework (15%)  Bell Work (10%)  Completion of assignments (daily work—30%)  Major projects, exams, and quizzes. (30%) Grades are posted online. Keep your assignments and make sure your recorded grade is accurate! Our Grading Scale 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 60% = F Grades are calculated on cumulative percentage and are rounded up whenever possible.

Books There are many books in the classroom, as I am sure you have noticed. The majority of this is the fiction collection that used to be in the media center. You may borrow these books, as long as you sign them out from me first. You are responsible for the books you borrow. If they are not returned, you will be charged for them.

Hall Pass No hall passes during the first 10 and last 5 minutes of class. You must have permission to use the hall pass. You may not to take the pass during class reading/discussions. It should only be used for emergencies. Is a privilege that can be revoked if misused. My class is not a “break” from your program, so please don’t treat it as such.

My Supplies I do have supplies that are available for student use (markers, crayons, glue, colored pencils, staplers, pencil sharpeners, tape, etc.) Please put them away neatly when you are finished with them. If you notice we are running low on something, please let me know so I can get additional supplies!

My Desk My desk/office is located in the back corner of the room. It is the only space in the classroom that is mine. Just like you, I also need a place to work and to put my things. Therefore, my desk is off limits unless I specifically tell you to go and get something from my desk.

Supplies you need for class For EVERY class you will need:  A pen (no glitter or neon colors please) or pencil.  A 3-ring folder to keep your notes and assignments in for this class ONLY  Paper for notes Yes, I DO grade notebooks!

PARCC Exam--JUNIORS At the end of this year, you will have to take the PARCC exam. You should know something about this exam already. I will help you prepare for this exam once I have a better idea as to when it is going to be given during the school year.

Our Textbook We have brand new textbooks this year. They are geared toward the new Common Core Standards and they are also set up to assist with PARCC exam preparation. There is a web site that goes along with this book that we will be using. More on that later… There is only a class set of these books; therefore, they will not leave the classroom for any reason. If you need a copy to use outside of class, I will give you access to an e-book copy of our textbook that you can access from a tablet, phone, or computer.
