Theatrical Design and Production Tools

1. Tape Measure A metal tape to measure 6-35 feet, encased in a plastic housing

2. Tape Measure A metal tape to measure 50-100 feet, encased in a plastic housing

3. Tri-square A small hand square used as a guide for 90 degree angles

4. Framing Square Used for making 90 degree corner joints in flat construction

5. Bevel Set Used for transferring angles (from the blueprint to the stage, or from one drawing to another)

6. Combination Square A 12” steel rule used for making 45 degree and 90 degree angles, rule used for measuring

7. Carpenter’s level Used to determine true horizontal and vertical angles

8. Chalk Line A chalk covered string in a metal or plastic housing, the string is stretched and snapped to leave a straight chalk marked line

9. Claw Hammer Has a hammer face and two sharply curved claws for removing nails

10. Mallet Have wooden, plastic or hard rubber heads, used for striking chisels or shaping thin metal without leaving hammer marks

11. Crosscut saw Used to cut across wood grain

12. Backsaw and Mitre box A fine toothed crosscut saw, the spine fits in a mitre box, used to make accurate angle cuts in wood

13. Coping Saw Used for making intricate curved cuts in thin plywood, interior cuts made by drilling a hole in wood, removing the blade, putting the blade through the hole, reattaching it, and cutting

14. Hacksaw Used for cutting mild steel, copper or aluminum

15.Utility Knife Also mat knife, used for light duty cutting/carving

16. Scissors Used for cutting paper/fabric

17. Wood Chisel Used for gouging, carving, or smoothing wood

18.Smoothing Plane Used parallel with wood grain

19. Twist drill bit Used in wood, metal or plastic for drilling holes, inserted into drill.

20. Wood Bits Also known as spade bit. Paddle shaped, use in wood or soft plastics

21. C- Clamp Designed to firmly hold wood, metal or plastic

22. Quick Clamp Light duty clamp placed and tightened with just one hand

23. Slip-joint pliers Also common pliers- slip joint pivot gives two ranges of jaw openings

24. Long-nosed pliers Also called needle nosed pliers, for bending light wire and holding small objects in hand to reach locations otherwise difficult

25. Adjustable Arc-Joint Pliers Also known as alligator pliers, have a large jaw opening range used for gripping round and square objects

26. Locking pliers Also known as vice grips- used to grasp, hold and lock

27. Diagonal Cutting Pliers Used for cutting soft electrical wire

28. Adjustable end wrench Also known as Adjustable Crescent Wrench, adjustable jaw opening, smooth jaw

29. Standard or slotted screwdriver Also known as flat head screwdriver- a metal shank, tapering to a flat tip with a plastic/composite handle, used with standard screws (-)

30. Phillips Head Screwdriver Screwdriver with four flanged tip to fit the crossed slots of the phillips head screw (+)

31. Wrecking bar/Crow Bar Used to pry apart previously nailed wood and remove nails, especially useful during set DE- construction.

32. Staple Gun A spring powered tool for driving staples, used for attaching fabric to wood and similar jobs

33. Table Saw Primarily used for ripping lumber and plywood

34. Motorized Mitre Box Also known as Chop Saw, motor/blade housing pivots (chops) down onto the work and makes straight or angled cuts

35. Circular Saw Used for cross grain and rip cutting sheet wood

36. Sabre Saw Also called jig saw- uses reciprocal up and down action with stiff narrow blades to make curved cuts, not as intricate as the scroll saw

37. Electrical Hand Drill Also known as “screw gun”- A lightweight handheld drill used to put in and take out screws and make drilled holes

38. Router A hand held, motor driven tool used to shape wood

39. Hot Glue Gun Uses sticks of heat activated glue (adhesive) VERY USEFUL!!

40. Hand Power Sander Spins a replaceable disc of sand paper to smooth wood, metal and plastic

41. Hand Belt Sander Uses belts of sand paper for rapid sanding

POWER HAND TOOL Safety Tips 1.Watch what you are doing! 2.Don’t talk to anyone or allow yourself to be distracted when operating the tool 3.Keep long hair tied up or pulled back so it doesn’t get tangled in the tool 4.Don’t operate the tool when you or the electrical cord is in contact with water or touching something damp 5.Wear Eye and ear protection 6.Be sure work is properly supported so the blade won’t bind (get stuck in wood) 7.Before cutting be sure the path of the intended cut is clear so that the blade or bit won’t cut sawhorses, extension cords, nails and the like
