CARPENTRY & JOINERY Hammers The tool used for assembling and striking wooden handle chisel is called a mallet. The Warington hammer is used for general bench work. Click arrow to go forward

Hammers The claw hammer is used to drive in and withdraw nails Dovetail saws are used to produce a fine cut, for example when forming dovetail joints. Click arrow to go forward

Chisels The bevel-edge chisel is used for paring joints especially dove-tail joints. Firmer chisel is used for general purpose chiselling. Click arrow to go forward

Chisels Firmer chisel is used for general purpose chiselling. A mortise chisel is used to form mortises for tenon joints. Click arrow to go forward

Saws The coping saw is used to cut small curves in thin wood or sheets. Panel saws are used to cut timber sheet materials leaving a fine cut. There are two other saws that look similar, Cross-cut & Rip saw. Click arrow to go forward

Saws The tenon saw is used for general bench joinery. (cutting tenons etc) Dovetail saws are used to produce a fine cut, for example when forming dovetail joints. Click arrow to go forward

Saws Click arrow to go forward The next saw is known as a hard- point or through away saw. Used to cut sheet materials and general construction. (joists, partitions)

Squares Combination square: used to check and mark 90 and 45 deg angle and is also used as a gauge. For marking and checking for square use a Try square. Click arrow to go forward

Squares Mitre square: used to check and for marking a 45 deg angle. For marking and checking angles from 1 to 180 degrees, use a Sliding bevel. Click arrow to go forward

Planes Smoothing plane: used to remove marks (pencil, machine) from timber, leaving a smooth finish. To prepare timber to size, the most suitable plane to use is a Sliding bevel. Click arrow to go forward

Planes Block plane: used to dress end grain and form chamfers. When forming grooves in timber the hand tool most suitable, is a Plough plane. Click arrow to go forward

Planes Bull nose plane: used to trim the cheeks of a tenon and dress into corner of stopped rebate. Shoulder plane, similar to bull nose has the same functions, one exception, better at trimming shoulders to tenon joints. Click arrow to go forward

Planes Side rebate plane: used to widen grooves and trim edges to housings. Open throat router is used to cut out waste to gauge line to a housing joint.. Click arrow to go forward

Marking tools Marking gauge: used to mark one gauge line parallel to the grain. (Housing and Halving joints) Mortise gauge is used to mark two gauge lines parallel to the grain. (Bridles & Mortise and Tenons). Click arrow to go forward

Marking tools Cutting gauge: used to mark one gauge line across the grain. (end rebates). Click arrow to go forward

Screwdrivers Pozidrive, Star or Phillips screwdriver used to withdraw and insert pozidrive, star or phillips screws. Flat or slotted screwdriver is used to withdraw and insert slotted screws. Click arrow to go forward

Boring tools Wheel-brace: used with twist drill to bore holes sizes from 1mm to 12mm. Press Esc to end the show
