Starting your Pentatonic Song Project With Sibelius STOP! You cannot start until your Pentatonic Song worksheet has been completed & approved by the teacher! After launching Sibelius, you will see this screen. Please choose Start a new score And click on OK

On this page you need to choose the paper you will be using. Since each song is unique, you must start by selecting Blank, then click on Change Instruments.

On this page you will choose your instruments and click Add to score for each one. Remember to use your worksheet for your instrument choices. You MUST use 3 instruments (one from each family on the WS) and CAN add a fourth instrument if you want to.

To select instruments, there are several options. FIRST choose from: Common Instruments, Orchestral Instruments or World Instruments. SECOND choose a family (like woodwind) and then only a list of instruments in that family will appear. Select your instrument & click Add to Score

Continue using the previous steps until you have selected the correct 3 or 4 instruments you will be using for your song project. They should be listed in the right side column Staves in Score: Use the worksheet to help you find each instrument. Then you can click OK.

On this page, you should see your 3 or 4 instruments and staves in the black, outlined rectangle on the right. Simply click Next to continue.

Do nothing on this page (House Style). Click Next.

On this page you choose a Time Signature. Select 3 OR 4 beats per measure. We will adjust the Tempo later. Then click Next.

The Pentatonic Scale we are using starts on a “D” and requires an “F #”. So here you need to select the key of D Major. Then click Next.

On this page, your title and name are added. Be sure to use “quotation marks” around your title & capitalize each word. (you can change your title later) Type your first and last name, and add the correct year after the copyright symbol. Then click Finish.

If your title, instruments, staves & name appear as shown below, you are ready to begin! First we need to add the correct number of measures. Count how many measures you have for the FIRST instrument. Below, there are 5 measures for the clarinet part. (remember 5) Then click on the LAST measure of your LAST instrument. It should then have a blue line around it. The LAST measure of the Zither part is selected below.

With the last measure highlighted in blue, hold down the Ctrl key and hit the letter “B” ONE time. Now you have added one measure to each part in your score. It is highlighted with a purple, double line. That makes 6 measures. Continue clicking “B” with the Ctrl key held down until you have 16 measures for each part HINT: You can also delete a group of measures that are not needed if they are all highlighted with the double purple line

Once you have 16 measures, we need to separate them into 4 measure lines. Do this by clicking on the bar line after the fourth measure. The line will turn purple. Then hit the Enter key.

Repeat the previous steps after every 4 measures. You should have FOUR lines of 4 measures each, with 3 or 4 instruments in each part. To see your entire score, change the percentage shown in the view finder.

Once you have set your score to 16 measures, you are ready to start building your melody by entering notes. First we need to make sure we have access to the Keypad. If it’s not already there, go to Windows and Keypad.

There are two basic ways to enter music into Sibelius without a midi piano. In both methods you first enter the note value you wish by selecting it on the key pad. You will be creating a rhythm as you write your melody, so keep it simple! Start by selecting a note. whole note eighth note If using ¾ meter, you can use a dotted half note, but NOT any whole notes. quarter note half note

To enter pitches, press “N” on your keyboard. That will put you in note entry mode (your cursor arrow will turn blue) Then you can put the note head on the correct line or space. In the Clarinet part I’ve added quarter notes on “D” “F#”, “A”, and “B” In the Zither part I’ve added half notes on “F#”, and “D” The Gong will play a quarter note on the 4 th beat of the first measure. The Taiko Drum is silent.

Eighth notes will automatically beam themselves into groups of 2 or 4. See the groups of 2 eighth notes in the Taiko Drum part.

Continue adding notes in each part. REMEMBER to use ONLY the 5 notes of your pentatonic scale. Use your worksheet to help you if needed. To EXIT note mode, hit “Esc” (your cursor will turn white) To go back to note mode hit “N” (your cursor will turn blue) HINT: when a note is BLUE, you can use the arrow keys to move it up and down the staff. HINT: You can copy and paste measures by highlighting them & using the copy/paste options.
