Agenda Welcome and Intro - (Andrea Harrington) ScholarSphere Demo and Updates - (Mike Giarlo & Linda Friend) ScholarSphere Project Update – (Beth Hayes)

ScholarSphere Is Here! Still considered in Beta – but many requested features already Prior to launch on 9/24, scheduled 2 weeks where “early adopters” could try out both the general search and their ability to upload materials More details later about the project timeline and future activities Had the assistance of quite a few stakeholders from various units in the Libraries in planning, supplying feedback on features, drafting policies, etc. Scheduled drop in labs and orientation sessions in September – will schedule more if there is interest

ScholarSphere Demo http://scholarsphere.psu.edu

Quick Facts ScholarSphere…. Is open to anyone for searching materials the depositors have tagged as Public Is available for anyone with a current Penn State Access ID to deposit and edit materials – including undergrads Makes it easy for scholars to assign Creative Commons licenses to works they deposit Makes it easy for scholars to assign viewing rights (Public, Private, Penn State only) Makes it easy for a creator to assign editing rights to other Penn Staters

Quick Facts, cont. Any type of file can be uploaded to ScholarSphere (although ability to preserve long-term might vary) – text, images, data sets, audio, video, etc. The first time a user logs in, a personal Dashboard is created. Only 4 types of metadata are required (creator, title, rights, keyword.) We encourage depositors to do more! Library of Congress Subject Headings and geographic location information are provided in drop-downs.

Quick Facts cont. cont. Can go back to previous versions and can easily edit/delete. Google Chrome is the preferred browser but others generally work fine. High visibility - the Google search engine shows public ingests really quickly. Has been tested for web accessibility
