2 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 Active Villages Development programme supporting village communities Long term sustainable sports participation opportunities Introductory/informal sport Main purpose is to offer people of all ages opportunities to experience the fun of sport

3 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 Background 3 year programme to September 2013 Funded principally by Sport England via Rural Themed Round, (National Lottery Sports Fund) Devon County Council, Active Devon and University of Exeter (Economic and Social Research Council)

4 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 The project works by: Identifying what opportunities each local community wants Providing support to “kick start” activities Supporting people within their communities to sustain the opportunities Creating an offer for people of all ages from primary school children to adults

5 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 Programme Specialist support to help communities identify those opportunities they would like and would be most appropriate Initial funding support to help in the establishment of activities (eg towards equipment, facilities, training etc) Training programmes provided for volunteers within each community to enable them to sustain activities Regular mentoring visits to support communities’ volunteers

6 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 Programme Access to bespoke ‘self help’ resources such as promotional support and materials, on-line tool kits and activity starter packs Links to 2012 Olympic Legacy programmes Inter-Village Games

7 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 Delivery 156 target parishes (500 – 2000 popn) across seven rural districts Roll out in five phases. Pilot started April 2010, phase 1 January 11, phase 2 June 2011, Phase 3 January 2012 Local Delivery Partners (LDPs) appointed to drive the project in each district. ‘Mixed economy’ of LDPs includes District Sports Development Units, Charity Groups, Local Leisure Operators etc.Tone Leisure in South Hams

8 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 Delivery Central support to the project from Active Devon includes: Toolkits developed to support LDPs (Community Engagement, Events and Marketing) Strategic engagement with Sport National Governing Bodies (eg Athletics and Cycling) Overall Project Management. Grant finance and monitoring accountability, Project Management Group meetings, participant reward card PR/Media support PhD Research Project

9 Active Devon – Stakeholder Event - 2011 So far… Pilot Phase and Phase one delivered 160 activities across 26 different sports in 45 communities. Examples include: –Youth engagement through multi-sport sessions with Devon Youth Service mobile bus –PCSO engagement and training to lead running groups –Short Mat Bowls equipment loan to start activity and purchase of equipment for community to continue activity –Led cycle rides between parishes –Club to community links eg cricket community fun match, veterans’ football team start up, specialist tennis coaching support for village Tennis Club –Zumba and streetdance across the county First full year c. 2500 participants
