JCOP Framework and PVSS News ALICE DCS Workshop 14 th March, 2006 Piotr Golonka CERN IT/CO-BE Outline PVSS status Framework: Current status and future work Oracle archiver status Advanced course

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop2 Current Status: PVSS  PVSS official release 3.1 -Download from http://cern.ch/pvssregisterhttp://cern.ch/pvssregister -Windows: available as a patch (SP2); already in the cumulative patch -Linux: available as complete installation un-installation of 3.0 required if installed in the same folder -Upgrade of 3.0 projects required button in System Management Panel  Evaluation of PVSS v3.5 prototypes -We got a few development snapshots, -Final version expected in summer -Some features being tested: new tree widget, trending widget,... project version management (integrated with file tree panel of GEDI) embedding custom widgets: proof-of-concept Root canvas -Framework compatibility and migration studies

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop3 Current status: Framework  Current version is 2.3.6:  Compatible with PVSS 3.1  Available from: http://cern.ch/itcobe/Projects/Framework/Download/welcome.html  List of all improvements and fixes: on the download page

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop4 Framework 2.3.6: Tools  NEW! Alarm Handling Component -Customized alarm screen (filtering based on FW criteria)  NEW! Complete reference help -Accessible from the main panel of the (new) installation tool  Access Control -Upon the decision of FWWG, the integration of AC mechanisms in device panels is up to developers now -minimal functionality may be provided by the Framework  Trending Tool -Improved template functionality Each instance of a template plot in a page may have separate parameters  Cooling and Ventilation Application -Proved to work with SPD -Next tests in ALICE with HMPID -Not (yet) distributed with the framework

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop5 Framework 2.3.6: Tools  Configuration Database Tool -Supports HARDWARE and LOGICAL hierarchies -Recipe templates (aka recipe-per-device-type) -Used by many sub-detectors now  FSM -Alarm handling based on summary alarms -Setting the state of a DU from a script The user gains control of when the state-transition happen Its use may lead to performance improvements (eliminate dpConnects)

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop6 Framework 2.3.6: Devices  ELMB v. 3.2.2 -Custom PDO's for analog inputs -Possibility to define a “raw value” sensor  Wiener Maraton -Released now -Requires new OPC server from Wiener (1.0)  CAEN -The list of supported boards is now available in the component's documentation: DE&N->Open Installation Tool... -> “Help” next to “CAEN” -No support for SASY (use of EASY recommended by CAEN)

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop7 CAEN component documentation...

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop8 Future Work (Framework Tools)  Access Control -Synchronization of AC in a distributed system: “domain controller” (?) to be discussed by FWWG  Trending Tool -Taking advantage of new trending widget of PVSS 3.5 Step1: (summer release) compatibility with existing functionality Step2: (later) integration of the new features  Configuration Database -saving/restoring of device configs (next version) -Improve performance of DB access layer -Integration with FSM -tag/version management (API, panels) -API and documentation clean-up

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop9  CAEN -Integration of AliceBox Requires discussion with Ombretta -Two other EASY modules: A3486, A3801  ELMB -ATLAS is working on SPI integration  BCAM (alignment cameras) -Will be integrated in April (Sorina, Oliver) Future Work (Framework Devices)

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop10 PVSS Oracle archiver status  New version in patch 167 -Available on request (from DCS coordinator) -Client side Big performance improvement –1000 changes/s Windows –2000 changes/s Linux Limitation is PVSS itself, not RDB -DB server side High CPU load Big overhead: ~200 bytes to store a float –Timestamp, quality, manager, etc –Indexes to speed up queries –DB internal overhead Dedicated IT/CO server could only handle 4 clients with a total of ~5000 changes per second

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop11 PVSS Oracle archiver status  Current work at CERN -Testing with different DB servers -Finding ways to reduce load on server -Contact with Oracle consultant -Testing with many clients (help from S. Kapusta)  Current work at ETM -Simplifying the set up procedure -Working on buffering when DB not available

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop12 Advanced Framework Course ... for really advanced PVSS users  Contents: -Recap on JCOP Technologies (FSM, Fw devices) -DIM -Access Control component -CNIC (security) awareness and tools -Alarm handling -Integration of custom devices into the framework -Configuration Database Tool -Integration of control hierarchies  More details, dates and registration: -http://itcobe.web.cern.ch/itcobe/Services/Pvss/Training/welcome.htmlhttp://itcobe.web.cern.ch/itcobe/Services/Pvss/Training/welcome.html  Contact your central team (ACC)

14 March 2006ALICE DCS Workshop13 Feedback... Your feedback is greatly appreciated: itcontrols.support@cern.ch
