3 America Enters World War I America entered the war in April 1917 on the side of the Allies English, French, and Russians are all desperate for assistance American Expeditionary Force landed in France 14,500 men (Ages 17-46) Women and African Americans participated (segregation) Goal of the AEF was to boost morale for the Allies

4 Impact of American Forces American Expeditionary Force rose to 2 million (and then 4 million) soldiers Americans were key in preventing the Germans from taking over Paris, France Battle of Chateau-Thierry (prevented takeover of Paris) Battle of St. Mihiel (offensive against Germans)

5 Home Front During World War I In order to prepare for warfare, American government involved itself more in society and the economy Liberty Bonds (“investments” in war effort) were sold to Americans and promoted by Hollywood celebrities Lever Food and Fuel Control Act regulates food consumption and increase production of food War Industries Board stimulates production for war effort by strictly allocating raw materials and putting controls on production

6 Keeping America PATRIOTIC Committee on Public Information (Government agency) Spread anti-German and pro-Allies propaganda Used public speakers, billboards, movies, and songs to promote the war effort National Security League (Organization of citizens) Convinced Congress to force new immigrants to take literacy tests Espionage Act (1917) makes it illegal to obstruct the draft process in any way Sedition Act (1918) makes it illegal to criticize the government, Constitution, Army/Navy
