3 Essential Question How are plants classified into two main groups? – Does the stem/leaf have tubes? Yes – Vascular No - Nonvascular ?

4 Vascular Plants The largest group Well developed system for transporting water & food True roots, stems, & leaves Tube-like structures that support plant & circulate water & food

5 Vascular Plants Two main groups of vascular based on stem type – Woody stems: trees & shrubs (tall) – Herbaceous stems: grasses, dandelions, tomato plants (soft, shorter stems)

7 Xylem & Pholem Xylem – moves water from roots to plant Pholem – moves food from leaves to plant (food and pholem start with the same sound)

10 Nonvascular Plants No well-developed system for transporting water and food No true roots, stems, or leaves Must get resources directly from the environment Passes on water and food cell-by-cell

12 Nonvascular Plants Line up along the outside of the classroom, shoulder to shoulder. Find a way to pass water from one end to the other using a cup. Was this effective? Why do you think nonvascular plants are small?
