Polymers and Composites

Carbon Carbon can be in so many different compounds because: 1.It can form 4 covalent bonds. 2. They can bond in chains or ring shaped groups.

Carbon Compounds Form Polymers A polymer is a large, complex molecule built from smaller molecules called monomers. Polymers form when chemical bonds link large numbers of monomers in a repeating pattern.

Natural Polymers Example of Plant Polymer is cellulose and cotton. Example of Animal Polymer is silk and wool.

Synthetic Polymers. Plastics are the most common synthetic polymer. Nylon and Polyester are synthetic fabrics. Polyvinylchloride (PVC) is used for making pipes.

Composites Combining useful properties of two or more substances is a composite.

Natural Composite Wood contains cellulose and lignin. They make a tree trunk strong.

Synthetic Composites Example: Fiberglass-Strands of glass fiber are woven together and strengthened with liquid plastic that sets like glue.

Too many polymers? Inexpensive. Strong. Last a long time.
