JANUARY 27, 2014 Homework: Read page : Make a list on page 64 in your N. Book of Natural & Synthetic Polymers. Can use fig. 5 on pg. 121( Look around your house for examples & add them to your list as well) Do Now: - Take out Polymers and Composites work sheet : Glue/ tape/ staple: in to Notebook on page 62 -Update T.O.C. pg. 62: Polymers and Composites pg 63: Polymer Notes: Pg 64: Natural & Synthetic Polymers Leave NB. Open to pg. 63: -Open TB to pg. 119

POLYMERS AND COMPOSITES TODAY I WILL… IDENTIFY THE STRUCTURE AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF A POLYMERS

WHAT IS A POLYMER? Polymer: is a large complex molecule that is built from smaller molecules that are joined together in a repeating pattern. These smaller molecules are called : Monomers

HOW DO POLYMERS FORM? Polymers form when chemical bonds link large numbers of monomers in repeating patterns. Branched Chain Linear- Straight Carbon Chain Ring Chains

TWO BASIC POLYMER PATTERNS A POLYMER CAN HAVE HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS OF MONOMERS 1) A chain of a single repeating monomer: Like a identical cars on a passenger train 2) A chain of two or three different monomers repeating in a alternating pattern

The chemical properties of a polymer depend on the types of monomers it is made from

READ PAGE : MAKE A LIST ON PAGE 63 IN YOUR N. BOOK OF NATURAL & SYNTHETIC POLYMERS NATURAL (Came from nature: Plants, animals) SYNTHETIC (Chemically processed or manufactured (man-made)
