1 Design and Technology at Surbiton High School What is Design and Technology? Everything we use has been designed by a creative individual or team. DT is all around us. Design and Technology is about designing and creating useful products that meet the needs of a target market or user.

2 Why should you study a Design and Technology subject? A different way of learning. A real appreciation of the world in which we live. A highly creative subject with lots of problem solving. A wide range of transferable skills. It could lead to a wide range of future Higher Education courses and potential career choices. Specialist teaching staff in all areas.

4 How is the course structured? AQA - Design and Technology – 2015-2016 Graphic Products, Resistant Materials or Textiles Technology Written Paper 40% of Total Marks 2 hours The paper will test all Assessment Objectives. All questions are compulsory. Section A: A design question based on the Contextual Preparation Sheet issued to candidates at the beginning of March. Section B: Covers all aspects of the specification content Coursework Project 60% of Total Marks 45 hours A single design-and-make activity selected from a choice of set tasks, consisting of the development of a made outcome and a concise design folder and/or appropriate ICT evidence. The design folder should consist of about 20 pages of A3 paper or the equivalent ICT evidence.

FAQs I am considering other subjects with a high level of controlled assessment work. Is this a problem? Not necessarily. We will help you to structure your work and give you interim deadlines to support you in your work. Will I need to do lots of extra work out of lesson time to gain a top grade? It is more than achievable to complete the controlled assessment project in the allotted hours in lesson time, but you may wish to spend some time in the Departmental clinics to support you in your work.
