What do you think of when you hear the word food? WHAT IS FOOD? Food is a source of enjoyment! Food is enjoyed at celebrations with family & friends. Food satisfies hunger. It is an important aspect of social life. Food gives the body energy.

 Your body needs food and the food you eat affects your health in many ways: FOODS SUPPLY NUTRIENTS How you look & feel! How you resist disease. How you perform mentally and physically. Nutrients: substances the body needs to regulate bodily functions, promote growth, repair body tissues, and obtain energy.

 Is the process by which the body takes in and uses the nutrients.  40 different nutrients are required to complete the task of good nutrition. NUTRITION:

 Carbohydrates 6 CLASSES OF NUTRIENTS FOUND IN FOOD:  Fats Proteins  Vitamins o Minerals  Water

 The foods you eat are your body’s energy source. You rely on the energy from food for everything you do----running, playing a musical instrument, playing sports, sleeping. You need energy to maintain your body functions----heart beating, body temperature, breathing, thinking etc. Things your body does that you do not realize it is doing. FOODS SUPPLY ENERGY  A process by which your body breaks down food to release energy. When your body uses the nutrients in foods, a series of chemical reactions occur inside your cells and energy is released. Metabolism:  This energy is also used for the growth and repair of the body.

WHAT ARE CALORIES? 180 calories 375 calories 110 calories Total: 750 Calories The amount of energy released when nutrients are broken down is measured in units called: 750 Calories Calories 85 calories Which lunch would you eat? A B Which lunch provides more energy? Which lunch has more nutrients?

FOOD & NUTRITION Nutrition is far too complicated to understand! A wise nutritionist said, “Simply look at your plate of food. What do you see? If you see a variety of colors---green, yellow, orange, and so on---you have a fairly nutritious meal. If on the other hand you see foods that are all the same color---brown meat, brown gravy, brown fried potatoes---you are likely to have a less nutritious meal.”

WITH THAT THOUGHT IN MIND, WHICH LUNCH WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOU? 180 calories 375 calories 110 calories Total: 750 Calories 750 Calories 85 calories Which lunch would you eat, now? A B List 5 reasons why you should eat the B lunch.

WHAT WOULD YOU ADD TO THIS DINNER TO MAKE IT MORE NOURISHING? Think of a variety of colors---green, yellow, orange, red, and so on- What colors are represented in the above pictures? Red Green Orange Yellow White Brown
