2 Basic information The Republic of Ireland is a state in the north-west of Europe which covers five-sixths of the island. The republic has got borders only with Northern Ireland - a part of UK. The name of the capital city is Dublin. Before 20 th century Ireland was a part of UK. After The War of Independence Ireland became a sovereign state. The population of Ireland is approximately 4.5 million. Official languages are Irish and English.

3 Josef Šajtar Sub nations Ireland has 419,733 foreign citizens. The largest group of immigrants comes from UK followed by Poland, Lithuania, Nigeria and Latvia.

12 Josef Šajtar Relation with UK In the past Ireland was a part of UK. They were like a colony, that’s why the War of Independence came. Irish free state was created on the December 6 th 1922. Since 1937 Ireland has got dispute with UK over the status of Northern Ireland. There were many incidents with Northern Ireland and that’s why in 1998 both states signed Belfast agreement. Now they are trying to co-operate to find solution of the region’s problems.

13 Josef Šajtar Relation with ČR Ireland has got an embassy in Prague and the Czech republic has got an embassy in Dublin. Both countries are parts of the European union. There are approximately 5,300 Czechs living in Ireland.

14 Josef Šajtar Politics Ireland is a constitutional republic with parliamentary system of government. The head of state is the president voted for seven years and can be re-voted only once. It has got Parliament with 166 members and Senate with 60 members.
