8. Why were they used? 1. For recruits: to get men to serve so they could replenish the lines 2. Supplies: They needed people to not use many supplies at home so more could be sent to the military 3. Money: they needed people to buy war bonds( loans for the government) so the government could spend more money 4. They needed to create a sense of Nationalism

9. Role of Nationalism Pride in your country Need for recruits Low supplies

10. Based on fear The goal was to create an ethnocentric society Fear of the “other kind” as a means to promote nationalism Portrays the central powers are an evil menace Spreads an idea of hatred

11. Types of posters There were two main types: 1. Positive -used to encourage the people. Everything is going well and we are winning! -Your contributions are working! Keep helping -catchy slogan -emotional appeal 2. Negative -Look at the horrible central powers! They are trying to hurt us! Fear based -If you don’t do this the men will die -The enemy is drawn to look like a monster -Name calling with half truths or lies
