2.  The Frontal lobe is located at the forefront of the skull and is the largest sector of the brain.

The brain stem sends the brains messages to the rest of the body like how to eat, breathe etc. Mike may have survived for so long because his brain stem had stored common information needed for survival and transmitted it around his body, taking over the role of his brain.
