Three Basic Tenets of Communism There is no private ownership of business Total governmental control of business. There is NO profit incentive in a command economy.

1. The government of a country should see that all people are adequately fed, clothed and housed.

Government ownership of property: Most people are not allowed to own their own homes, businesses, or other productive resources Individual rights or freedoms are limited The government provides free education, health care, and other public services There is no uncertainty. People are told when and how to work. A government committee decides what job a person will do and what/how much a company will make. The government assigns each worker a quota to meet Everyone earns equal wages. There are no incentives for working harder, longer, etc.

2. The government of a country should control the production and distribution of goods and services.

… -How much to produce -What to produce -How to distribute the goods and services The state owns the land, natural resources, industry, banks and transportation facilities as well as mass communications. Communist nations believe government planners should decide…

Soviet communism in full glory. Food lines for bread and basic food items. This is what government run distribution looks like!!

3. The government of a country is responsible for the economy of a country.

Example: If the government wants more mathematicians, then the universities train more mathematicians. This limits personal choice! Government officials make choices that favor themselves (homes, vacations, cars, etc.). Note: The government allows some individuals to own some businesses. Because the government has total control over production, these economies change rapidly. Whatever is needed most is produced.

The CONSUMER is KING! The GOVERNMENT has the economic REMOTE!

Ways to Classify Economies Ask the question: decisions How are decisions about production made in the economy? Private ownership of production Decisions are made by the market. Consumers and producers make decisions. Public and private ownership of production The government is making decisions along with the market. Combination of public and private enterprise. Public ownership of production Decisions are made the government.

Another Way to Classify Economic Systems Ask the questions: 1. Who owns the means of production? 2. Who determines prices? Regulate economic activity with a focus on social equality and a fair distribution of wealth
