3 Tuesday’s Answers 1. In Douglas’ opening statement he was calling for self-government where whites were entitled to more over the blacks. Lincoln was more concerned with how the institution of slavery was separating the Union.

4 Tuesday’s Answers continued 2. Douglas believed that blacks should not have any rights, including citizenship. Lincoln believed that blacks should have some rights however they should not be able to vote, be jurors, or hold office.

8 Thursday’s Answers 1. Southerners refer to the Civil War as the War between the States because when they seceded, they formed their own country called the Confederate States of America. Therefore, they were not of the same country and it was no longer a civil war. 2. Tennessee was the last state to secede in May 1861.
