Why do we need maps? Objectives EEn.0.0.2.B. Explain the purpose of major map features and identify cardinal and intermediate directions on a map Agenda IN: Why do we need maps? THROUGH: Map notes / Whiteboarding OUT: Mapping mistakes

No! The geographic north pole is the place that is located the farthest North on the globe (90°N). It is not the TOP of the Earth. Likewise, the geographic south pole is the place that is located the farthest South on the globe (90°S). It is not the BOTTOM of the Earth.

Map – a flat representation of Earth’s surface – points on Earth are in motion due to: continental plate motion subsidence (downward movement of land) & uplift tides (rising and falling of large bodies of water) – Maps are imperfect: some portion of the surface will always look too small, too big, or out of place – Mapmakers must find ways to limit the distortion of shape, size, distance & direction

Map Features: 1. Title: tells us what a map shows London Subway Map

2. Scale: shows what the distance is in real life

3. Legend: identifies symbols on a map

4. Compass Rose: shows directions on a map

W E S N 5. Cardinal Directions: North South East West

W E S N NW SE SW NE 6. Intermediate Directions: Northeast Northwest Southeast Southwest

One of the perks of being a judge on American Idol is visiting cities across the country. This season, Randy Jackson decided to take a road trip from Texas to NY rather than fly. However, he made some mistakes when using the map features!

Identify which map feature Randy misused based on the mistakes described below. Then offer advice on use the map feature properly in the future. 1. He went in the wrong direction. What map feature did he misuse? How do you use this map feature properly? 2. He didn’t travel far enough. He thought NY was only 4 inches away instead of 1,600 miles. What map feature did he misuse? How do you use this map feature properly? 3. He used a map of Europe instead of a map of the US. What map feature did he misuse? How do you use this map feature properly?

Why do we need maps? Objectives EEn.0.0.2.C. Identify points on a map using coordinate points. Agenda IN: Treasure Map THROUGH: The Global Grid Notes PRACTICE: Message in a Bottle OUT: Treasure Map 2

The distance around Earth is measured in degrees; the Earth is 360 degrees in circumference. Lines of latitude and longitude form a global grid. Latitude is the distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees Longitude is the distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees The Global Grid

Important Lines of Latitude
