5  As European power grew, the Mohicans believed they had to learn new ways to survive.  Became Christian  Learned European methods for farming  Built schools  Assisted in Revolutionary War and War of 1812 John Sergeant, Missionary

6  In the 1700s, the Mohican people were pushed to move.  Settled in Bowler, Wisconsin

7  As the Stockbridge people moved, they joined with another tribe, the Munsee, to become the “Stockbridge-Munsee Band”  Today: ◦ 1565 members ◦ ½ living on the 22,000 acre reservation.

8  Tribal businesses support the Stockbridge- Munsee Tribe. They include: ◦ Mohican Northstar Casino ◦ Many Trails Banquet Hall ◦ Pine Hills Golf & Supper Club ◦ Little Star Convenience Store ◦ Mohican RV Park

9  Traditions Lost! ◦ Written account of history is missing pages. ◦ No fluent speakers of the native language. ◦ Annual Pow Wows keep the culture alive.

10  What is that?! ◦ Sovereignty is supreme and independent power or authority in government as possessed or claimed by a state or community. ◦ The Stockbridge-Munsee have their own leaders that work together with the government of Wisconsin for the good of the people.
