3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will learn about the Constitution and how it has changed over time Students will be writing their own Constitution for classroom rules Objectives: Content/Knowledge: The students will be able to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of the Constitution by writing their own version and presenting it to the class Process/Skills: Students will learn how to read old documents Students will demonstrate their understanding by presenting their own modern version Values/Dispositions: Students will discuss the documents, ask questions, and engage in a classroom wide conversation on their interpretations of what they read

4 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: It is important for students to know and understand that the government we have today wasn’t always like this. The government has changed and been rewritten to what it is today Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 14.A.2 Explain the importance of fundamental concepts expressed and implied in major documents including the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and the Illinois Constitution. National – NCSS Themes Time, Continuity, and Change Power, Authority, and Governance

5 Logical/Mathematical

6 Logical/Mathematical Students will be finding similarities and differences within the Articles of Confederations and the US Constitution and the Preamble Resources/Materials Government documents The Articles of Confederations The Preamble The Constitution of the US

7 Verbal/Linguistic

8 Verbal/Linguistic Students will present their findings to the class verbally. They can also talk about how they came to their conclusions and how they found the definitions of words/phrases they didn’t understand Resources/Materials Government documents The Articles of Confederations The Preamble The Constitution of the US Space to present

9 Musical/Rhythmic

10 Musical/Rhythmic Students can find videos and songs that explain the documents. They can also come up with their own rap/song/poem to present their interpretations Resources/Materials Government documents The Articles of Confederations The Preamble The Constitution of the US Computer and speakers to play music

11 Visual/Spatial

12 Visual/Spatial Students can draw out how they think it looked when the documents were being written and then present their drawings to the class, the drawings will be hung up in class Resources/Materials Government documents The Articles of Confederations The Preamble The Constitution of the US Art supplies

13 Body/Kinesthetic

14 Body/Kinesthetic Students will be able to act out how they think life was back then and how the documents were written Resources/Materials Government documents The Articles of Confederations The Preamble The Constitution of the US Costumes

15 Interpersonal

16 Interpersonal Students will be required to write two things they like about others presentation and 1 thing that could be improved. Resources/Materials Paper for rating

17 Intrapersonal

18 Intrapersonal Students will be required to keep a personal journal and at the end of the unit students will be asked to reflect on what they have learned and how they have grown from what they have learned. Resources/Materials Computer to type the journal/essay

19 Naturalistic

20 Naturalistic Students will be shown paintings and given maps how things looked when the Articles and Declaration of Independence was written. Then they will be asked to point out patterns they see. Materials/Resources Paintings Student journals
