11 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2008 How do we engage with the community theme?  Regular classroom teaching  “Special projects”  Community service individually and/or collaboratively with other IB World Schools The IB encourages and facilitates schools to explore and address the theme further through:

12 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2008 How do we engage with the community theme?  by adjusting the focus and slant of normal classroom work not by adding to it  and within the existing curriculum frameworks Schools can explore and address the theme

13 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2008 In the Primary Years Programme Within the transdisciplinary themes. Examples:  Global infectious diseases within “how the world works”  Global poverty within “Sharing the planet ”

14 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2008 In the Middle Years Programme Within normal subjects and requirements Examples:  Selection of relevant literature in languages A and B  Global infectious diseases within sciences and technology  Selection of appropriate relevant material in statistics  Selection of topic of personal project

18 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2008 Community actions: Education for all  Students from Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School in Kingston, Ontario, Canada built a children’s playground in the Dominican Republic.

19 © International Baccalaureate Organization 2008 Community actions: Education for all / digital divide  Students at Bali International School, Indonesia, have developed the Taman Bacaan Community Library in Bali, providing books and computers for the local community – opened February 2008.
