2 Who are the “Progressives”? NOT a political party Included democrats, republicans, other parties, etc. Reacted to the effects of the era’s rapid industrialization, immigration, and urbanization. Many believed that private charity could not do enough to improve the lives of the industrial poor. Gov’t intervention needed Drove political debate to plan for progress. The Progressive Era (~1890-1920)

3 What did the progressives believe in? Reformers focused on improving the country socially, morally, economically, and politically. Four basic beliefs: Government should… 1. Be more accountable to its citizens 2. Curb the power & influence of wealthy interests 3. Be given expanded powers so that it could become more active in improving the lives of its citizens 4. Become more efficient & less corrupt so that they could competently handle an expanded role The Progressive Era (~1890-1920)

4 What inspired the Progressive movement? Muckrakers Revelations sent shockwaves through the country Alerted the public to wrongdoings in business & politics i.e. L. Steffens – Shame of the cities, U. Sinclair The jungle Other writers Henry George – Progress and Poverty About speculation, property tax, etc. Edward Bellamy – Looking Backward Futuristic best selling novel about 2000 ‘utopia’ Gov’t control, business focus: human needs, not profit The Progressive Era (~1890-1920)

5 On what problems did the Progressive movement focus? Varied widely Some examples: Labor & Working Conditions Women’s Suffrage Prohibition Nativism In general, wanted to rid the gov’t of corruption, expand gov’t regulation of economic activity, and improve human welfare
