EquipmentMaterials and Reagents  Ring, Brass, Conforming to Dimensions Prescribed by ASTM D36.  Ring Holder Assembly, Brass  Pouring Plate – flat, smooth brass plate  Ball, Steel, 9.5 mm diameter.  Ball Centering Guide, Brass  Thermometers (ASTM 7F, 8F)  Hot Plate with Stirrer  USP Glycerin  Stir Bar  Beaker, 600-ml Pyrex  Silicon Grease Scope / Objective This procedure covers the determination of the softening point of asphaltene and asphaltene/resin blends using the ring-and-ball apparatus immersed in glycerin. For materials which do not display a typical melting point, softening point is used to characterize the tendency of the material to flow at elevated temperatures encountered in service. Manual Softening Point Determination using Ring and Ball Apparatus Continued 12 Place ball centering guide on top of ring (ensure sits flush on holder oriented such that pins not touching ring). Refer to picture below for correct placement of components. 13Place ball in center of ball centering guide. 14Lower Ring Holder Assembly into beaker on hot plate. 15Observe thermometer reading to ensure temperature rise is within limits – adjust if needed. 16Record the temperature reading at the instant the sample surrounding the ball touches the bottom plate of the Ring Holder Assembly. 17Report result to nearest whole degree.
