Soccer Mini-Golf An original Scooby Hoo invention

Clark Elementary school needs games for its fun fair. Using sensor technology, we aim to increase the level of participation by making an original, exciting game. The Challenge

●Allow children to compete against friends/peers ●Rewards for completing a game ●Provide a sense of achievement without just handing out prizes ●Requires physical activity ●Create games that are attractive ●Simple ●Easy for moderators to run ●Minimize time required to complete game ●Successfully run games without risk of harm ●Easy Assembly / Clean Up ●Encourage teamwork Needs/Project Focus https://www.asme.org/career-education/articles/team- building/teaching-teamwork-to-engineers

● Competitive ● Sense of achievement ● Physical activity ● Simple ● Easy to run ● Safe Why Soccer Mini-golf? http://www.abc.net.au/news/fifa-world-cup-2014/

1. Enclose ball 2. Establish a starting position 3. Establish a final destination for the ball 4. Display a theme 5. Allow the ball to move 6. Provide obstacles that make scoring a goal difficult 7. Detect that a ball has entered the goal 8. Alert player that they have successfully completed the game 9. Detect when contact is made with the obstacles 10. Alert when an obstacle is hit Functional Requirements Example of Functional Requirement #6

Prototyping Round 1

Prototype Name: Goal prototype Date: 11/4/14 Purpose: Test if sensor can detect when a ball rolls through goal post. The Prototype One prototype made of foam to represent final goal. Sensor attached to side of goal to test if ball passes through goal; if object goes through, LED should illuminate. Data/Descriptions of Experimental Results · Sensor picked up motion outside designated range · Adjusted sensor threshold until it only picked up motion between the goal posts · LED is lit when object enters area between goal posts Lessons Learned IR distance adapter was able to detect motion between the goal posts for a miniature soccer ball.

Foam Goal Demonstration

Prototyping Round 2

Prototype Name: DefenderDate: 11/5/14 Purpose: Test if defender can detect being hit by an object. Also determine height for obstacles. The Prototype Several foam defenders were made to represent different countries. One was used for testing the sensor. Height of obstacle was found by comparing to average height of a five year old. Data/Descriptions of Experimental Results · Accelerometer taped to back of foam defender obstacle · Objects tossed at defender to see if accelerometer flashed LED · LED was lit when defender was hit, but was also lit when entire foam base was shaken · Avg. height of 5 year old is ~40in = 3.33ft Lessons Learned Threshold of 40 is too low for accelerometer as the LED was lit too easily. Accelerometer is, however, an efficient method for testing if an obstacle is hit. Obstacle of height 3ft is sufficient.

Prototyping Round 3

Prototype Name: Course platformDate: 11/4/14 Purpose: Testing for friction when using foam and to see if short barriers are a good alternative for enclosing the course. The Prototype Created one course consisting of a foam square base surrounded by 5 inch barriers. Included on base were two foam defenders and foam goal prototypes. Ball used has diameter 5.5in. Data/Descriptions of Experimental Results · Foam base shook when obstacles rolled across it · Barriers not high enough to prevent ball from exiting course · Ball does not stop rolling Lessons Learned Barriers must be higher than height of ball, so 5 inch barriers are too short. A wall twice the height of ball is sufficient. Foam base is definitely implausible for final design as it is not durable enough. Base must also provide more friction so ball will stop rolling after each kick.

Foam Course With Barriers

Cost Analysis

● Sensor should be firmly anchored onto goal post ● Playing surface must provide friction ●Obstacles and goal must be very sturdy (wood) ●Obstacles should be 3 feet tall ● Placement of sensor to record goals ● Functional ratios for interaction items within the design; ie- ball size: placement of sensors, ball size: height of perimeters, obstacle size: average child height, ball size: goal size
