1 11-27 AMENDMENTS

2  Federal courts do not have jurisdiction in cases against a state  People of one state who want to sue people of another state cannot use the national U.S. courts for this (State courts) 11 TH AMENDMENT

3  Provides for separate elections for president and vice president  This amendment helped established the Electoral college. 12 TH AMENDMENT

4 Abolishment of Slavery  Slavery or forced labor shall not exist in the United States or any place that belongs to the United States  Except as punishments for a crime, if a person is convicted in a court of law 13 TH AMENDMENT

5 Provides equality for all citizens  Citizen Rights  No state shall make laws or enforce any laws which limit privileges and rights of the citizens of the U.S.  States shall not take a person's life, liberty, or property without going through the steps required by law.  States may not deny any person within it the equal protection of the laws 14 TH AMENDMENT

6 All men have the right to vote  United States can not deny or limit any man's right to vote because of their race, color, or fact that the person was previously a slave  Congress may make any laws to enforce this amendment 15 TH AMENDMENT

7  Congress has the power to pass direct taxes, such as income tax.  Congress can decide on and collect taxes on income that people have, no matter where they get their income. 16 TH AMENDMENT

8 Senators are elected by the voters in their state; governor fills state positions if position opens during term.  Chosen by the state legislatures before the passage of this amendment. 17 TH AMENDMENT

9  Selling and drinking of alcoholic beverages is made illegal (Prohibited)  Starting January 16, 1920, it was illegal to make, sell, transport, import, or export intoxicating liquors in all territories of the U.S.  Time period known as Prohibition. 18 TH AMENDMENT

10  Gives women the right to vote  The United States and individual states may not deny or limit the right to vote just because a person is female.  Also known as women’s suffrage  Right to vote and run for a political office position 19 TH AMENDMENT

11 Beginning of President, VP, and Congress terms in office begin in January; presidential succession can take place before Presidential inauguration.  President/VP terms end at noon on January 20th of year their term would normally end. Newly elected begins.  Congressional terms end at noon on January 3 of year of the end of their term. 20 TH AMENDMENT

12 Selling and drinking alcoholic beverages is made legal  repealed #18  People in any state are allowed make, sell, and transport intoxicating drinks, except in states that have laws against it. 21 ST AMENDMENT

13 Presidents may serve no more than 2 terms or a total of 10 years.  Person may not serve as president more than 2 times  If a VP becomes president (on death or removal of president) and serves more than 2 years, he can only be elected president once  Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only president to serve more than two terms  Served 4 terms, only 1 year of his 4 th before dying. 22 ND AMENDMENT

14 District of Columbia is allowed a presidential Electoral College vote.  3 electors 23 RD AMENDMENT

15 Eliminates poll tax  No required payment needed to vote 24 TH AMENDMENT

16 Provides for presidential succession and filling a vacant office of VP, if VP dies or is removed from office.  President my choose new VP if dies, resigns, or removed, with majority approval of Congress 25 TH AMENDMENT

17  Lowered voting age from 21 to 18 26 TH AMENDMENTS

18  Congressional Compensation increases may not take effect until after that congressional term is over 27 TH AMENDMENT
