3 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Information service about user support on EU statistics Ways to offer the information service about user support on EU statistics: ● published on the web sites ● published in publications –in the catalogue of publications; –in the annual report of Statistics Estonia; –in the advertising bulletin “Use and find statistics”; –in the advertising bulletin “GIS in Statistics Estonia”. ● participation in different events (fairs, seminars, etc); ● user trainings

4 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Best practice of Estonia – co-operation with the National Library The National Library www.nlib.eewww.nlib.ee organizes professional trainings for Estonian library employees. Library network of Estonia – today there are: - 1 national library; - 74 research and special libraries; - 552 public libraries; - 475 school libraries; - 55 special libraries; - 21 libraries of institutions and higher education.

5 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Statistical Literacy and Information Literacy Statistical literacy ●by the side of statisticians: ability to write the statistics so that it were comparable and meets the users’ needs; ●by the side of users: ability to read, understand and use statistics. Statisticians talk about statistical literacy, but librarians talk about information literacy. Statistical literacy is part of the information literacy. Information literacy according to the definition of American Association of School Librarians is "the ability to find and use information".

6 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 The criteria of the Information Literacy ●ability to recognize need for information; ●ability to differentiate appropriate sources from inappropriate; ●ability to formulate need for information and locate the information; ●understand the structure and qualities of databases; ●abilities to use information-communication technology (ICT); ●ability to evaluate the importance of information received from different sources; ●ability to analyse information; ●ability to select and structure information, to quote and refer, to know the copyright problems; ●the most important skill is to synthesize the received information and create new knowledge.

7 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Librarians and info specialists The main focus in co-operation - the criteria of the Information Literacy - the availability and use of the electronic data, so that the specialists of libraries could supervise the customers who have come to the library to look for statistical information or comparative data about EU statistics - choosing the topics according to the needs of sub-target groups Co-operation with Tallinn University who trains librarians - last three years Statistics Estonia has taught the course “Statistical information – Business Information Resource”.

8 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Librarians and info specialists Target subgroups of librarians were trained in: 2005 ● National Library ● EU Info Centre in NL ● Central Libraries 2006 ● Russian school libraries 2007 ● Estonian school libraries More than 300 librarians have been educated and trained in the field of EU statistics.

10 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Co-operation with enterprises Why enterprises need EU statistics? Mostly enterprises need statistics: 1) for marketing; 2) for planning; 3) for publishing, etc.

11 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Co-operation with enterprises Estonian good practice is to reach the companies through the different enterprises associations and organizations. 3 undertakings in co-operation with different organizations: - Estonian Employers' Confederation http://www.ettk.ee/ http://www.ettk.ee/ target groups: entrepreneurs, personnel managers main topics: how to find different data about salaries and labour costs in Eurostat's database. - International GIS DAY http://www.gisday.com/ http://www.gisday.com/ target groups: mainly map-making enterprises, teachers, students, etc. main topics: TGM interface on the web site of Eurostat

12 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Co-operation with enterprises Estonian Association for Quality (EAQ) http://www.eaq.ee/ http://www.eaq.ee/ target groups: quality specialists from enterprises and higher main topics: Eurostat’s web site and databases, the Eurostat Quality site, European Statistics Code of Practice and User satisfaction surveys The object is to carry on this work in co-operation with unions, confederations, etc.

13 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Co-operation with enterprises In co-operation with the Market Manager the action plan for the year 2008 was worked out: ● Banner on the web site of Statistics Estonia and EU Information Centre; ● Electronic advertising letters; ● Trainings; ● News letter.

14 Aime Lauk01.04.2008 Co-operation with enterprises In conclusion: ●co-operation with the associations connecting enterprises and institutions; ●knowing the needs of target groups; ●finding an essential key-word for the target group (for libraries – “information literacy”; for media “recent and comparable data); ●analysis of feedback will ensure greater success in using EU statistics.
