Forms of Energy

Energy Energy Energy- The ability to do work Energy- The ability to do work Work- A transfer of energy Work- A transfer of energy Work and energy are measured in joules Work and energy are measured in joules Joules- SI unit of work and energy equal to 1 Newton per meter Joules- SI unit of work and energy equal to 1 Newton per meter Newton- SI unit of force Newton- SI unit of force

Potential Vs Kinetic Energy Potential Energy- Energy that is stored as a result of position or shape Potential Energy- Energy that is stored as a result of position or shape The higher up an object is, the greater potential energy. The higher up an object is, the greater potential energy. Kinetic Energy- The energy of motion Kinetic Energy- The energy of motion The greater the speed and mass of the object the greater the kinetic energy The greater the speed and mass of the object the greater the kinetic energy

Types of Potential Energy Gravitational Potential Energy-Potential energy that depends upon an object’s height Gravitational Potential Energy-Potential energy that depends upon an object’s height Elastic Potential Energy- The potential energy of an object that is stretched or compressed. Elastic Potential Energy- The potential energy of an object that is stretched or compressed.

Major Forms of Energy Thermal Energy- (Heat Energy) Total kinetic energy contained in all the particles of a substance. Mechanical Energy- Energy an object has because of its motion or position. Chemical Energy- The energy stored in chemical bonds. Electrical Energy- The energy associated with electrical charges. Light Energy- The energy carried by light and other forms of electromagnetic waves Sound Energy- The energy carried by sound waves Nuclear Energy- The energy stored in atomic nuclei
