3 Target: I will be able to describe treatments cardiovascular diseases Pg. 59 Treatments for Cardiovascular Diseases: Electrocardiogram: A graph of the rhythm of the heart which detects a heart attack or abnormalities

4 Radionuclide Imaging: Injection of radionuclides into the blood so they can follow them through the blood vessels in the heart Determines how much blood is flowing to the heart, how well the chambers of the heart are functioning, and how much damage has been done

5 Phonocardiography: Recording of heart sounds which are transferred to graph paper

6 Coronary Angiography: A catheter (thin flexible tube) is threaded through blood vessels from the groin to the heart to show narrow or obstructed vessels

7 Dye is injected into the catheter and a moving X- Ray is taken of the heart

8 Artificial Pacemaker: Implant in the chest and wired to the heart Set to keep the heart at a regular beat when the natural heart beat is too slow or set to a fixed rate all the time

9 Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI): Uses magnets to look inside the body Helps to diagnose congenital heart defects

10 Heart Transplant: Surgical procedure in which a deceased patient’s heart is transplanted into a live person

11 Coronary Bypass: Surgical procedure which created detours around obstructed or narrowed coronary arteries Uses a vein from the leg and grafts it onto the heart

12 Balloon Angioplasty: Surgical procedure which threads a balloon tipped catheter through the body to the site of the blockage The balloon is inflated and pushed plaque again the artery wall to open it up

13 Heart Valve Surgery: Surgery required when a heart valve does not close properly or is too tight An artificial valve made of plastic or metal is inserted.

14 Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: 1. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs 2. Limit cholesterol in your diet Foods include: eggs, liver, fish, fast foods, butter, shellfish, shrimp, bacon, sausage, red meat, cheese, and pastries. 3. Include plenty of veggies, fruits, and grain products in your diet

15 4. Maintain a healthy weight 5. Limit salt intake 6. Get plenty of physical activity (30 min-1 hour 4-5 days a week) 7. Manage stress in daily life Summary
