Do Now: Movie Clip Identify and discuss meat production and consumption in the US.

Aim: How Is Food Produced?

Meat Production Meat and animal products: 2 nd major food producing system. - Eggs and milk are good source of protein Animals for meat raised in Pastures and rangelands - produces 1/2 Feedlots - bread to gain weight fast (CAFOs)

Meat Production Meat production increased fourfold between 1961 and 2007 Increased demand for grain Demand is expected to go higher Each year 56 billion animals are raised and slaughtered. 8X human population.

Meat Consumption On the rise globally…3 billion people hope to eat more meat. Double again by 2050… - more money in China and India Veal, pigs, chickens, and turkeys in developed countries spend most of their lives in crowded cages and pens. Many environmental and health problems. Strains world grain crops.

Read A loud Recall of nearly 9 million pounds of meat not fully inspected

Pause…Think…Discuss… What might happen to industrialized food production and to your lifestyle if oil prices rise sharply in the next 2 decades, as many analysts predict they will? How would you deal with these changes?

Fisheries and Aquaculture 3 rd major food producing system. Fishery: concentration of a given fish fit for commercial harvesting in a body of water. Fishing with fleets depletes fisheries and uses many resources

Aquaculture Blue Revolution Practice of raising marine and fresh water fish in cages in open waters. In 2010 ½ of all the fish eaten in the world were produced through aquaculture. World’s fastest-growing type of food production

Aquaculture Mostly raising species that feed on algae and other plants. Carp in ChinaCatfish in the USTilapia Some fish is fed to meat eating shrimp and salmon

Problems: 63% of worlds fisheries are being depleted. Using large fleets adds GHG and other pollutants to the atmosphere. 70% is raised in China; 12% in India China consumes the most seafood.

Fish and Shellfish Production Have Increased Dramatically

Industrialized Food Production Requires Huge Inputs of Energy Mostly nonrenewable energy – oil and natural gas Farm machinery Irrigate crops Produce pesticides (petrochemicals) Commercial inorganic fertilizers Process and transport food 19% of total fossil fuel energy use in U.S. U.S. food travels an average of 2,400 kilometers

Summary: Suppose you live near a coastal area and a company wants to use a fairly large area of coastal marshland for an aquaculture operation. If you were an elected official, would you support or oppose such a project? Explain. What safeguards would you impose on the operation.
