7  Remember…  We talked about how perspective can influence people.  Why was this important?

9  We all see the world differently.  Discovering and developing your own beliefs / values takes time and will change.  When you are in High School what do you Value?  At Work?  A Parent?  A Senior?

10  What are humans like, And why do they act like they do?  What is the nature of society?  What is our role as individuals in society?

11  okay, that is a little strange… But, you’ve asked:  why did he do that?  Why are some people Jerks?  Why would she do that?  What should I do?  One group comes to mind when I think about these questions.

13  When we answer these questions for our selves, we begin to develop our Ideology.  Ideology: A system of thoughts based on beliefs and values.

14  Who are you?  Where are you going?  What is the world around you like?  How should we treat people?  How the world should develop?

15  Can be based individual values.  shared among a large group of people and may then become an Ideology.  Or Identify your own beliefs and values.  Let’s take a few minutes and complete the sheet on page 7 of your text book.  Use a piece a determine where you fall in the ideological spectrum.

16  This is individual, you don’t have to tell or show anyone.  If you have more Cs, you are likely a collectivist.  If you have more Is, you are likely an individualist.  Perhaps you have a lot of question marks (?)  This is the Grey area where ideas overlap.

17  No one is completely a collectivist or and individualist.  We all fall in a line with a mix of both.  Collectivism - Putting the needs of the whole first.  Individualist - Putting the needs of the individual first.

19  The Group is important.  Be like the group.  Wealth is shared.  The well-being of the group is more important.  Individuals are unique.  Personal success and development.  Everyone is responsible for his/her actions.  Competition.

23  Like we talked about before.  Your ideas combine with your experiences and influences to make you who you are.  Let’s take a more in depth look at some of the factors that influence you.  Let’s have some discussion. But, keep it respectful!

24  Experiences shared among many people.  These experiences can alter the perspective of an entire country.  Individuals will each react differently to a collective stimulus.

27  Culture is the combination of beliefs, customs, practices, and social behaviors belonging to a certain group.  Think about the different cultures we see in Fort McMurray.  Many groups pass along strong cultural identity.

28  Often people who speak the same language develop a shared identity and culture.  Think about the French Population in Fort McMurray.  Let’s look at its effects. (turn to page 13)

29  A religion is a formalized set of collectively held beliefs and practices.  Spirituality is a way or relating to the soul and the world.  How can religious ideas influence people lives and beliefs?  Keep it nice!

30  How people see Gender is affected by their experiences and what society says about Gender.  People may follow tradition or non-traditional roles. (what are these?)  To address the disparity of this relationship, some cultures have developed Feminism.  Feminism: the organized struggle for the equality of women.

32  Tools for passing along information in society.  We have just discussed many types of media.  The Media has a strong influence on how we see ourselves and the world around us.

34  Old ideas change a alter our ideologies.  As philosophers make new developments and predictions.  As scientist make new discoveries.  Even political leaders alter how we see the world.

39  An individuals beliefs and values may contend with those around him/her.  Like we said, it is a gray area that includes both individualist and collectivist ideas.  Now, your first assignment… turn to page 24 and complete questions 2 and 4 on the index card I give you.
