2016-01-23 2Page Version Many, if not all churches, have a process of membership. Rather than continuing to call it membership we should be calling it partnership. What difference does it make? We think the difference is significant, one that is much greater than the name itself. In Philippians 1:3-6 the Apostle Paul writes a letter to the church in Philippi, and writes about a partnership in ministry that he has with them. Paul felt that each member of that church who was advancing the good news of Christ was one of his partners. As Paul counted on the ministry of those in Philippi, we count on the ministry of committed partners of Hope Community Church. That is why we will now call our membership class a “partnership” class. 3 2016-01-23 3Page Version Why partnership? People may assume that because they profess Christ, there is no need for any further identification with a local church, believing it enough to call oneself a Christian and to attend worship services regularly at one place. What then is the point of partnership? There are three reasons for partnership: 1. We believe the concept of partnership is Biblical. While the term “church member” is never used, the concept is implicit throughout the New Testament. Believers clearly identified themselves with a specific local body and were challenged to become devoted participants. 2. Formal membership process is valuable to the leaders of the church as they seek to fulfill their God-given task of shepherding. By its very design, Hope Community Church attracts people from all spiritual walks. With that, it is important to identify those who truly comprise the “flock” – the core that can be counted on to build and sustain the ministries of the church. 3. Experience shows that partnership benefits the individual. In a culture where commitment is no longer highly valued, recognizable partnership is an important step that moves each of us out of the vague clouds of our good intentions and into the clear light of committed participation. How do we define partnership? Scripture is full of references to the once-and-for-all union with Christ and His body, which is confirmed when one chooses to follow Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-13; Ephesians 2:13-22; 4:3-6; Colossians 1:13-22). When this occurs, you become a “positional member” in the universal church of Jesus Christ, based solely on His merit and grace. Positional membership is eternal and unchanging. Become a Partner continued…

2016-01-23 4Page Version What Now? How does the church feel about communion? What is the history of the RCA? (do they make televisions?) What is the purpose or philosophy of this church? Where do I go from here? All good questions! You may have other questions and we’re hoping to provide some of the answers. You have been attending the church for some time now and we’re glad you have felt at home. We would like you to give serious consideration to attending our basic “church acquaintance” class. It’s called CLASS 101: Discovering A Commitment to Christ and Church Partnership. When we meet on Sunday morning Panera breads and “Cup of Hope” coffee are available. Childcare is provided if needed. 7 2016-01-23 7Page Version Blessings to you! Welcome to Hope Community Church (HCC). On behalf of staff and the board of Consistory we are honored to have you consider partnering with us! Making a commitment to be “part of the family” will be a mutually beneficial experience! As you have been attending worship services and getting better acquainted you have, no doubt, witnessed how God is blessing us at HCC. We believe this is a result of our sincere attempt to be a God-honoring church and that we are meeting the needs of His people. There’s one thing we don’t want! Please do not think that partnership is just “another ritual” in the church. We have no intention of you joining HCC and the fading into inactive anonymity. Our desire is for each partner to be active in ministry. As you are …Following …Connecting …Worshiping with other believers. Why do we want you to be an “active partner”? Because we believe people bloom when they’re serving God! Serving God in the church is a positive and rewarding experience. We have seen people grow and bloom into the persons God intended them to be through service in the congregation. It enhances personal and spiritual growth when we serve each other “as unto the Lord”. We desire to serve you too! Our prayer is that as you join hands with the body of Christ at HCC, and as you allow the word of God to speak to your heart, we will together be transformed into the image of Christ himself. Welcome to

2016-01-23 8Page Version Become a Partner Many, if not all churches, have a process of membership. Rather than continuing to call it membership we should be calling it partnership. Why partnership? People may assume that because they profess Christ, there is no need for any further identification with a local church, believing it enough to call oneself a Christian and to attend worship services regularly at one place. What then is the point of partnership?

2016-01-23 9Page Version Become a Partner (continued 2) There are three reasons for partnership: 1.We believe the concept of partnership is Biblical. While the term “church member” is never used, the concept is implicit throughout the New Testament. Believers clearly identified themselves with a specific local body and were challenged to become devoted participants. 2.Formal partnership process is valuable to the leaders of the church as they seek to fulfill their God-given task of shepherding. By its very design, Hope Community Church attracts people from all spiritual walks. With that, it is important to identify those who truly comprise the “flock” – the core that can be counted on to build and sustain the ministries of the church. 3.Experience shows that partnership benefits the individual. In a culture where commitment is no longer highly valued, recognizable partnership is an important step that moves each of us out of the vague clouds of our good intentions and into the clear light of committed participation.

2016-01-23 10Page Version Become a Partner (continued 3) How do we define partnership? Scripture is full of references to the once-and-for-all union with Christ and His body, which is confirmed when one chooses to follow Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-13; Ephesians 2:13-22; 4:3-6; Colossians 1:13-22). When this occurs, you become a “positional member” in the universal church of Jesus Christ, based solely on His merit and grace. Positional partnership is eternal and unchanging. But then the Bible also urges positional members to continue growing in becoming participating members in a specific local assembly (Romans 12:4-8; I Corinthians 12:25-31; 14:12, 26; Hebrews 10:24-25; I Timothy 3:14-15). Obviously, a person may be a member of several different local bodies during the course of his or her lifetime while maintaining a permanent positional partnership in Christ’s universal church.

2016-01-23 11Page Version Why Join the Church? One of the most frequently asked questions related to the topic of church membership is, “Why should I join the church, anyway? After all, it makes no difference — I can still go to church and participate in all the activities without feeling tied down or committed.” The last word in that quote is the first reason to join the church – COMMITMENT. Church partnership is a step of commitment in which the dedicated Christian expresses through both word and deed that Jesus Christ is Lord and Master in their life. This commitment involves several areas of a Christian’s life:  Commitment to God-Matthew 22: 37  Commitment to the family-Proverbs 12: 7b  Commitment to personal growth-Philippians 3: 14  Commitment to ministry-Ephesians 4: 11, 12

2016-01-23 12Page Version Why Join the Church? (continued 2) The key to a Christian’s successful commitment lies in accountability to the local church and its leadership. (Hebrews 13: 17; Matthew 18: 15-17; I Thessalonians 5: 12, 13.) Without this accountability it is too easy to falter. But with the loving support, encouragement and challenge of the leadership and congregation, each person cannot only maintain, but grow in their Christian commitment. There is a second reason to join a local church partnership, and that is RELATIONSHIP. There is no such thing as “Lone Ranger” Christianity. We, “as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (I Peter 2: 5) We are being built together as a spiritual house for the work of ministry.

2016-01-23 13Page Version Why Join the Church? (continued 3) “So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12: 5) We compliment one another with our different and unique talents and abilities as we join together as a team. Each one of us has a very important function within the body and together we are able to accomplish great things for the glory of God. When you enter the door of the church for the first time, the people open their arms and accept you unconditionally and without reservation. But all relationships are two- way, and this requires you to reciprocate by opening your arms and embracing the church with the support and commitment of your time, talent and treasures. COMMITMENT and RELATIONSHIP – these are the two primary reasons a Christian should join a local church. Yes, you receive the right to vote at the annual business meeting, and as a member we even give you a name tag, but the true spirit of church partnership lies in the things of the heart.

2016-01-23 15Page Version History & Structure of the RCA The Reformed Church in America is the oldest Protestant Church in America with a continuous history of ministry.

2016-01-23 16Page Version A Brief history of HCC in Lincoln The Hope Reformed Church is one of the 970 congregations that make up the Reformed Church in America (RCA), the oldest Protestant denomination in North America, with a continuing ministry since 1628. The word “reformed: comes from the Protestant Reformation, the great religious revival which swept across Europe in the 1500’s under the leadership of men such as Martin Luther and John Calvin. Hope Church was organized on July 20, 1950 by organizing pastor, Rev. John Klaaren and 35 charter members who met for worship in a rented church, which was later purchased, at 23 rd and N Streets. In one year, the church grew to 94 baptized members and on its first anniversary a call was extended to its first Pastor, Rev. John Ettema. By early 1952, the congregation had outgrown its facilities. In 1953, land at 4221 J Street (present location) was purchased. Construction of a new church facility began on this site in the summer of 1953 and the dedication of the new structure was held on May 18, 1955. In December of 1988 the members of the congregation voted to expand and improve the facilities by adding a new sanctuary and classrooms and remodeling the existing facility. Ground for the new construction was broken on June 11, 1988, and the new wing and remodeled facilities were dedicated on June 3, 1990.

2016-01-23 17Page Version A Brief history of HCC in Lincoln (continued) Hope Church completed a self-study as part of the pastoral search process in 1998. The study indicated two major reoccurring themes. The first to be an evangelical church focused on reaching the un-churched and bringing them into a relationship with Jesus Christ. The second theme was to relocate to a location that was highly visible and accessible. In October 2001, the church sold its property at 4221 J Street and then in April 2002 purchased 20.25 acres near Hwy. 77 Bypass and Pioneers Blvd. September 1, 2002 Hope Community Church began its new ministry at a temporary worship site at Roper Elementary School with office space at 20 th & Pine Lake Road. April 10, 2005 Hope Community Church moved into its new facility at 4700 South Folsom.

2016-01-23 18Page Version Has God’s Hand Been Evident in the Journey? Prompt sale at a price significantly over appraised market value. Availability of land. Visibility and accessibility were two determining factors. Present parcel meets those demands. 20.25 acres puts us in agricultural zoning thus bypassing tough County/City building restrictions. Cost of the land was reasonable compared to other properties on the market. The property that was purchased was not on the open market. Consistory desired to have land purchased and new location determined before vacating 4221 J Street. God answered that prayer. Temporary worship facility. God shut the door at the new Southwest High School but opened the door at Roper Elementary which is very close to our South Folsom location and in an area with few churches and many young families.

2016-01-23 27Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska THE BIBLE We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, a collection of books written by men who were guided by God to teach us about Himself and His will. We believe that all those things necessary for our salvation are clearly set forth in the pages of Holy Scripture. We believe that the Bible, as applied to our hearts by the Holy Spirit, is the only true authority for the individual Christian and for the church. To place any other authority, written or oral, alongside that of Holy Scripture is to make the Bible incomplete. We believe the Bible is the inspired (God breathed) Word of God. Psalm 19: 7-11; II Timothy 3: 16-17. GOD We believe in One God, who is our Heavenly Father, who made all things and rules over all in wisdom, righteousness and love. We believe that this one living and true God is a Trinity of persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I John 5: 1-8

2016-01-23 28Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine (continued 1) Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska JESUS CHRIST We believe that Christ was both human and divine. That He was born of a virgin and existed before His coming to earth by way of the incarnation. John 1: 1-14. We believe in the substitutionary atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, that He by the grace of God tasted death for every person, and that all must be born again or are forever lost. Hebrews 2: 9; John 6: 44-69; John 3: 1-18. We believe in the physical resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ and that He ascended bodily into the heaven, and is now at the right hand of God as our Mediator, prophet, priest and King. Acts 3: 12-26; John 20; I Corinthians 15: 12-28. HOLY SPIRIT We believe in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit for all Christians. The Holy Spirit is our revealer, He makes known the things of God to our life. No one confesses the name of Christ except for the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of that person. The Holy Spirit leads one to salvation. The Holy Spirit inspires us in worship and in the work of the Kingdom of God. Romans 8:14-27

2016-01-23 29Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine (continued 2) Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska MAN We believe that man was originally created in the image of God. As he came forth from the hand of the Creator he was truly righteous and holy. By a free act man rebelled against God’s rule, and by this rebellion separated himself from God who is the source of all life. Genesis 1. SIN We believe that sin is rebellion against God. Whenever we break God’s holy laws we sin against Him. Since sin cuts one off from fellowship with God, who alone is the source of life, it can finally lead only to eternal death. God’s Word tells us that sin is a universal human problem. “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3: 10-26; 6: 23.

2016-01-23 30Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine (continued 3) Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska SALVATION We believe that “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3: 16. We believe that the Eternal Son of God became man for us men and our salvation, and that He is forever the Son of God and the Son of Man, in One Divine Person. FAITH We believe that by faith we have applied to our hearts all the benefits which Christ merited for us on Calvary’s cross. We believe that by a living faith in the Savior our sins are forgiven us by God, and the perfect righteousness of Christ Jesus is declared to be ours. “The just shall live by faith.” Romans 1: 17.

2016-01-23 31Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine (continued 4) Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska GRACE We believe that everything we receive, including our faith and salvation, is due only to the grace of God. By grace we mean God’s unmerited favor toward us; God blesses us because of who He is, rather than what we are. This marvelous truth forever cuts off all grounds for human pride and self-glory. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God; not because of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8 GOOD WORKS We believe that we are saved from sin and condemnation by God’s grace, through faith alone. Faith, however, is never without good works. As Christians we are called upon to pattern our lives after the example of our Lord Jesus Christ. These good works can never become a source of pride, as though God has saved us because we are better than other men, for these very works also are the result of God’s grace in our lives. Titus 2: 1-15; 3: 1-11.

2016-01-23 32Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine (continued 5) Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska THE CHURCH We believe that the church is the special possession of the Son of God, who in every age and in every place calls people into its’ fellowship by His Word and Spirit. We believe that all those who by true faith are united to the Savior, are part of His body, the church. We believe that it is the duty of every Christian to unite himself to a worshipping congregation where the true Christian faith, as presented to us by the witness of Holy Scripture, is proclaimed. We believe that there are three marks by which we can identify the true Christian Church. Here you will find the Word of God preached in all its clarity, the Sacraments administered in all their purity, and the life of her members reflective of the will of God. THE SACAMENTS We believe that there are but two sacraments, instituted by Christ for the edification, or strengthening of the faith of His followers. The sacraments are signs and seals of God’s activity and grace. We believe that Holy Baptism is for us and our children the sign and seal of God’s eternal covenant of love and faithfulness toward us. In baptism we receive the mark which sets us apart as belonging to the family of God. The water of baptism symbolizes the promise of the washing away of our sins by the blood of Jesus Christ. We believe that the sacrament of Holy Communion presents to us in visible and symbolic form the same Savior who is proclaimed in Holy Scripture. Thus when by faith we partake of the bread and wine, we do indeed in our souls receive the true bread and wine of life eternal, Jesus Christ.

2016-01-23 33Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine (continued 6) Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska THE RETURN OF CHRIST We believe that the same Lord Jesus Christ, who ascended into Heaven, shall one day return as the judge of the living and the dead. We believe that at the return of Christ the dead will arise, and all mankind will receive their just judgment of God. We believe that those who all their life have rejected the Savior, will at the Last Day be rejected by God, who alone is the source of life and joy. We believe that those who have confessed Christ before others, He will own and confess before God and the holy angels, and receive them into eternal joys of heaven. We believe that heaven is a place of eternal blessedness and that hell is a place of eternal suffering. II Corinthians 5: 1-10 THE COMMISSION We believe that we as Christians must be faithful to our Savior’s command to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. Every Christian must of necessity be a missionary presenting the claims of Christ to all. Our Savior said: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” Matthew 28: 19-20; Acts 1:8

2016-01-23 34Page Version Summary Statement of Doctrine (continued 7) Hope Community Church Lincoln Nebraska THE CHALLENGE We believe that it is a privilege and joy to serve the Lord with our best in time, talents and resources. As the Lord blesses us, we return our gifts to Him, for His glory and the salvation of others.

2016-01-23 36Page Version Sacraments, Creeds, And Doctrinal Standards (continued 1)

2016-01-23 37Page Version The Creeds The Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

2016-01-23 38Page Version The Creeds The Nicene Creed We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds; God of God; Light of Light; very God of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven; and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven; and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Ghost; the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the Prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead; and the life of the world to come. AMEN.

2016-01-23 39Page Version The Creeds (continued 1) The Athanasian Creed (1) Whoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith; (2) which Faith, except one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. (3) The Catholic Faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in unity; (4) neither confounding the persons nor dividing the substance. (5) For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. (6) But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one; the glory equal and the majesty coeternal. (7) Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost. (8) The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated and the Holy Ghost uncreated. (9) The Father immeasurable, and the Son immeasurable, and the Holy Ghost immeasurable. (10) The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Ghost eternal. (11) And yet there are not three eternals; but one eternal. (12) As also there are not three immeasurables, nor three uncreated; but one uncreated; and one immeasurable. (13) So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, the Holy Ghost almighty. (14) And yet there are not three Almighties, but one Almighty.

2016-01-23 40Page Version The Creeds (continued 2) (15) So the father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God. (16) And yet there are not three Gods, but one God. (17) So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord. (18) And yet there are not three Lords, but one Lord. (19) For, as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge each person by himself to be God and Lord; (20) so we are forbidden by the Catholic Faith to say, there be three Gods, or three Lords. (21) The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. (22) The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. (23) The Holy Ghost is of the Father, and of the Son, neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. (24) So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts; (25) and in this Trinity, there is not first or last. (26) But the whole three persons are coeternal together and coequal. (27) So that in all things, as it is aforesaid, the unity in Trinity, and Trinity in unity is to be worshipped. (28) He therefore that will be saved, must thus think of the Trinity.

2016-01-23 41Page Version The Creeds (continued 3) (24) So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts; (25) and in this Trinity, there is not first or last. (26) But the whole three persons are coeternal together and coequal. (27) So that in all things, as it is aforesaid, the unity in Trinity, and Trinity in unity is to be worshipped. (28) He therefore that will be saved, must thus think of the Trinity. (29) Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he believe rightly the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. (30) For the right faith is, that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man; (31) God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the world; and man of the substance of his mother, born a human body; (33) equal to the Father, according to his Godhead; and inferior to the Father as to his manhood; (34) who, although he be God and man, yet he is not two but one Christ; (35) one, not by the conversion of the Godhead into the flesh, but of taking of the manhood into God. (36) He is not one of mixture of substance, but by unity of person. (37) For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man; so God and man is one Christ.

2016-01-23 42Page Version The Creeds (continued 5) (38) He suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead; (39) he ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; (40) from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. (41) At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies; (42) and shall give an account for their own works. (43) And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. (44) This is the Catholic Faith, which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.

2016-01-23 43Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership Because of the clear teaching of the Word of God, and because we believe the health of the Body of Christ (which is the Church) and the growth of the individual believer is at stake, the Board of Elders believes that a positive answer to the following questions are crucial in the area of Christian obedience and, hence, to full partnership in this fellowship. Prayerfully consider your response to these questions as they reflect the responsibilities and expectations of the members of this church. 1.DO YOU BELIEVE THE BIBLE TO BE THE WORD OF GOD, AND THAT THEREIN ONLY IS CONTAINED THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE WAY OF SALVATION? This church believes that the Bible is divinely inspired (II Timothy 3:16); that it will last through the ages (Matthew 24:35); and that it is our only firm foundation for faith. We believe that those who say “yes” to this question will also be indicating their willingness to submit to the authority of the Word. We encourage all of our people to be reading the Word of God daily and to bring it to church each Sunday. Spiritual growth will result from our study and application of the Scriptures (I Peter 2:2).

2016-01-23 44Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership (continued 1) 2.HAVE YOU THE ASSURANCE THAT ALL YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN AND DO YOU PUBLICLY CONFESS JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR? We believe that a person can have the assurance of his sins forgiven in this sinful world. All around us we see confusion, doubts, and guilt. Many times, sadly, there are people in the church who simply are not sure that they’ve been forgiven and that eternal life is theirs. Yet, on the basis of God’s Word, we believe that you can have full assurance that your sins are forgiven and that you’re walking in a right relationship with God. You might consider the following Scriptures: I Thessalonians 1: 5; II Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 10:22; I John 2:3; I John 4:13; I John 5:10. The Bible clearly teaches that we must confess Jesus Christ publicly. The fact that people come forward at a public service expresses their desire to confess Jesus Christ before others. Even now, your positive response to this question indicates a public acknowledgment that you have been born-again and are seeking to live your life fully for Jesus Christ.

2016-01-23 45Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership (continued 2) 3.ARE YOU DETERMINED, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, TO FOLLOW CHRIST AND TO LIVE A SANCTIFIED LIFE OF HOLINESS AND DEVOTION TO GOD AND HIS CAUSE? Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 6:24). Every Christian should have a great desire to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and to become more like Him. It is the teaching of God’s Word that we must “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33) We are exhorted to live holy lives in this world (Ephesians 1:4). Jesus, realizing that Christians would live in a world of sin, asked His Heavenly Father that He should not take us out of the world, but that He should keep us from evil (John 7:15). As you consider joining Hope Church, please keep in mind that God is looking for disciples who are willing to sacrifice, work, pray, and help the kingdom of God move forward. Having considered the Scripture, we feel that we can ask nothing less of you as you join us.

2016-01-23 46Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership (continued 3) 4.ARE YOU WILLING TO BE GOVERNED BY THE WORD OF GOD, AND WILL YOU RESPECT THE REFORMED UNDERSTANDING OF HIS WORD AS TAUGHT IN THIS CHURCH? This question is really quite simple and needs little explanation. If you are not willing to be governed by the Word of God, you are not a Christian. This denomination is under the authority of God’s Word and is subject to it. And, in joining Hope Church, one ought to be aware of her interpretation and understanding of Scripture. While it would be unprofitable and unwise to ask any individual to concur with every “jot and tittle” of any denomination, we do ask respect for our heritage

2016-01-23 47Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership (continued 4) 5.ARE YOU WILLING TO SUPPORT THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST THROUGH THIS LOCAL CHURCH WITH YOUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS, AS GOD PROSPERS YOU? God’s Word plainly tells us that a true disciple of Jesus Christ will give of his time, talent, and possessions to God. The subject of being a faithful and true steward is presented in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Numerous Scripture references could be given about the importance of tithing (giving one-tenth) and giving in general. Among them would be the following: Malachi 3:10; Genesis 14:18-22; Leviticus 27:30-33; Deuteronomy 14:22-27; and II Corinthians 8 and 9.

2016-01-23 48Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership (continued 5) 6.WILL YOU SUBMIT TO THE LEADERSHIP OF THIS LOCAL CHURCH AND WILL YOU, BY THE HELP OF GOD, BE LOYAL TO THIS FELLOWSHIP AND HER PEOPLE? God has determined that every local church have a group of spiritual people who are to discern Christ’s leading for that church. They are to seek constantly to glorify Christ by making decisions based upon sound biblical principles. These leaders are to serve and care for the flock and give themselves for it. The responsibility of the members of the church is to place themselves under the authority of these spiritual leaders. (I Thessalonians 5:12,13; Hebrews 13:17; I Peter 5:5) It is expected that members of Hope Church will seek to be loyal to God and His Church and the leaders He has raised up. In order for you to answer “yes” to this question, you must realize what we are striving for. We desire to be a spiritual church that keeps the Lord first and foremost in our daily lives and in our church programs. We will continue to stress growth spiritually and numerically. We will continue to train Christians to be an effective witness in this day and age. We will continue to emphasize the necessity of a strong discipleship program and encourage our members to be involved in discipleship on every level. Therefore, if you want God first, desire to see the church go forward in every area, and want to win your friends to Christ, you will not find it hard to be loyal to this church.

2016-01-23 49Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership (continued 6) 7.BECAUSE THE BIBLE PLACES SUCH A HIGH PRIORITY UPON THE FAMILY, AND BECAUSE THE FAMILY WAS THE FRIST INSTITUTION ORDAINED BY GOD, WILL YOU SEEK TO DO ALL YOU CAN TO DEVELOP A STRONG, HEALTHY, CHRISTIAN FAMILY IN YOUR HOME? Oh, how easy it is to take for granted those in our families! We cannot emphasize enough how important it is for each family member—parents in particular—to prayerfully seek to enhance their own family relationships. We believe that as we individually seek to know and obey God’s Word as it pertains to us as males and females; husbands and wives; and as single adults, that we will best be in a position to see strong Christian homes result. Members of Hope Church are expected to prayerfully and carefully maintain strong and growing relationships with their immediate family members for the glory of God.

2016-01-23 50Page Version The Responsibilities and Expectations of Partnership (continued 7) If you are a Christian and have been filled with the Spirit and are willing to place yourself under the spiritual care and feeding of the leaders of this church, and if you are willing to commit your presence and possessions to the work of Christ, and if you desire to become trained and involved in a personal ministry for the good of the whole body, we want to encourage you in any way we possibly can. To you we would most definitely say: “Please prayerfully consider becoming a part of us in an official manner. We need you!”

2016-01-23 51Page Version Partnership Vows Do you accept the Gospel of God’s grace in Jesus Christ revealed in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the only way to eternal life? Do you acknowledge that you are a sinner, sinful by nature, but that by the grace of God alone yours sins have been forgiven and your old nature put to death, so that you may be brought to newness of life and set apart as a member of the body of Christ? Do you promise to pray for yourself and for others, seeking God’s guidance as together we seek to grow in knowledge and understanding of the faith? Do you promise to show in your own person the joy of new life in Christ by your active participation in the life of the Church and by faithful attendance to worship, service, and the offering of prayers and gifts to the glory of God? Do you promise to accept the spiritual guidance of the Church, obeying its basic doctrines and its teaching, and do you promise to walk in the spirit of Christian love with the congregation, seeking the things that make for unity, purity, and peace?

We are all loved by God despite our brokenness and saved through a relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ. By following Christ and His teachings, our lives are transformed and become a witness of His love for all. Relationships are developed which strengthen faith and bring all closer to our Savior. We celebrate and glorify God through Worship. We provide service and mission to our community and the world.

2016-01-23 55Page Version Core Values for Ministry Approved April 17, 2001 by Hope Reformed Church Consistory A Commitment to Grace We cannot earn God’s acceptance. He accepts us now and forever through faith in Jesus Christ. The church should not focus on guilt to motivate its member, but to encourage them to live good lives from a deep sense of gratitude toward the Lord. A Commitment to Biblical Authority We have an authoritative spiritual guide in the Bible, the inspired, infallible Word of God. What the Bible teaches takes precedence over church traditions or human opinion. At its center, God’s Word teaches that Jesus Christ is Lord and that all creation is for His own pleasure. The Cross and resurrection are the central events of human history. All history will lead to the triumphant return of the Lord to judge the living and the dead and reign eternally. A Commitment to Communicating Christ to a Contemporary Culture We should be able to understand Christ and the Christian message because it should be communicated in a contemporary manner so we can identify with and understand. Worship in the church should be relevant, innovative, excellent, practical, relational and Spirit filled. God’s wisdom is not men’s wisdom. We are called to share our faith with the unsaved in ways they can understand and receive God’s grace.

2016-01-23 56Page Version Core Values for Ministry (continued 1) A Commitment to Balanced Christianity We need a balanced Christian experience which includes meaningful worship (corporate, personal/daily), life related Biblical teaching, significant relationships with other Christians, and serving others according to our unique S.H.A.P.E. (Spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences.) Believe alone isn’t enough; we must act obediently to what God calls us to do. A Commitment to Every Christian is a Minister We believe that the primary responsibility of the pastor(s) in the local church is to “prepare ‘God’s’ people for works of service.” (Eph. 4: 12) God has shaped each one of us, along with every other Christian, for ministry. There are no spectators and there is no unemployment. All believers have a special and unique role to play in God’s Church. A Commitment to Prayer We believe that God desires his people to pray and that he hears and answers prayer. Therefore the activities and ministries of the church will be characterized by a reliance on prayer in their conception, planning, and implementation.

2016-01-23 57Page Version Core Values for Ministry (continued 2) A Commitment to Small Groups/Fellowship We are committed to Small Group Ministry as one of the most effective means of building relationships, stimulating spiritual growth, and developing leaders. Fellowship, sharing our common faith in a loving, safe, relaxing, and accepting way is central to the life of the church and every believer. A Commitment to Give Generously We believe giving may be one of the most tangible expressions of faith. Believers are encouraged to give generously and sacrificially of their time, talents, money, and resources to carry out God’s work. A Commitment to Authenticity God-given openness, honesty, and sincerity should rule our lives in this world and especially our relationships. We desire to be real. A Commitment to Growth. Although numerical growth is not necessarily a sign of God’s blessing, and is not a sufficient goal in itself, we believe that God desires for us to reach as many people as possible with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we will pursue methods and policies which will facilitate numerical growth, without compromising in any way our integrity or our commitment to biblical truth.
