2. Background The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test® (FCAT) is the state mandated test used to evaluate student and school performance annually on the state established standards. The Florida Department of Education has changed from the FCAT to the FCAT 2.0 to align to the new standards. The FCAT 2.0 measures the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) and replaces the Sunshine State Standards.

Effect of Changes Decrease in student performance scores Increase in the number of students failing to score at proficiency level on FCAT 2.0 Increase in the number of third grade retentions Increase in the number of students needing remedial classes Increase in remedial classes will restrict the student selection of electives Decrease in Graduation rate

7. Consequences of Changes School Grades will be affected – Number of A and B schools will decrease – Number of D and F schools will increase Elementary grade levels will have the most dramatic impact. Increase cost to the district during times of budget cutbacks

8. Important to Remember A lower FCAT 2.0 score will not necessarily indicate that a student learned less than in prior years. It indicates that a student has more to accomplish to reach the new standards and expectations.
