3-D TOY PROJECT

CREATING A 3-D OBJECT FROM A PAINTING The kindergarten classes created paintings of monsters (last year it was robots). We take the paintings and turn them into 3-D clay objects. We package them and give them back to the kindergarteners at the art show in April.

LAST YEAR WE DID ROBOTS THIS YEAR IT’S MONSTERS

The Graphic Design class will create the background for the packaging

DETAILS The monster can only be 4 inches tall, up to 4 inches wide, and can only be 1 inch thick. The measurements are important so the monster will fit into the plastic package which is a to go container cut in half. The clay monster will be held in place with a pipe cleaner. The monster MUST look like the original painting; same shape and colors. The paintings are numbered. This is how we know which kindergartener the monster belongs to. It is very important that you put the number on your monster. Large and legibly on the bottom. Keep all clay pieces in your plastic bag that is also numbered.

DRAW THE MONSTER IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK Draw the monster and the dimensions in your sketchbook. Color with colored pencils. Make sure it matches the painting. You will be given a copy of the painting to look at.

GRADING You will be graded on your clay design, neatness in painting, similarity to original painting, and packaging of the toy.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? This project brings attention to the art department. It is a collaborative project between schools and departments. All art classes will participate in this assignment as well as the graphic design class. We will also advertise this project in the newspaper and on social media.

TERMS: Score - make scratches in the surface of the clay where two pieces will be joined. Slip - Clay mixed with water with a mayonnaise consistency. Used in casting and decoration. Incise - to engrave or carve a design into a surface

Relief- To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. Low Relief High Relief

In the Round – Free standing sculpture (like the monster you are building)

LET’S PRACTICE! Some of you may have been taught to “score and slip” your clay. This method works but unfortunately some times parts fall off. There is another method called the Patz method. Let’s watch a video explaining this method and then you can create an elephant of your own to practice with. Do a good job! You will be graded on this. For those of you that created an elephant in an art class last year you can create another animal or object using the same method. Perfect your joining skills! This makes a huge difference in your clay pieces. 14 LET’S GO OVER SOME CLAY RULES: Do not throw clay. Do not sweep a dirty dusty floor. This causes the clay dust to go in the air and we breathe it in. That’s not good! Jeremy will vacuum at the end of each day. That is much better for our lungs! Clean up after yourselves! Tables are numbered as well as supplies. Count your items at the end of each class. Clay should never touch the table. Work on your boards or use newspaper. Wash you hands well and use lotion. Clay is very drying to your skin. Do not drop clay on the floor. If you do, PICK IT UP! It makes a huge mess.

Thank you for trying your best and creating piece of art that will make a 5 year old happy! They love seeing their painting “come to life”
