Emotion Create a mind map using “emotion” as the center word.

Emotion A set of complex reactions to stimuli involving subjective feelings, physiological arousal, and observable behavior. Why do we experience emotions?

Cognitive Theory of Emotion: James –Lange Theory EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. You notice these physiological changes and interpret them as your body’s preparation for a fearful situation. You then experience fear.

Cognitive Theory of Emotion: Cannon – Bard Theory EXAMPLE: You are walking down a dark alley late at night. You hear footsteps behind you and you begin to tremble, your heart beats faster, and your breathing deepens. At the same time as these physiological changes occur you also experience the emotion of fear

Neuroscience of Emotion: Autonomic Nervous System Sympathetic system: – releases epinephrine (adrenaline!) – Respiration and heart rate increases – Pupils dilate – Perspiration increases Parasympathetic system: – Calms body down, reverses all changes

Polygraph Tests

Brain Games: Anger 1.What situations can make the average person immediately angry? 2.Anger is a social emotion. Based on what you have seen, explain why.

Bellringer (in journals) Based on our definition of emotion from last class, list every emotion you have felt so far today. Then, go back and label which physical change you believe took place with it. Ex: excitement, heart rate increase nervous, sweaty

Emotion and Management

Listing/Writing Create a list of everything you need to do that is stressing you out. Then, rank them in order of priority (most to least) Focus on getting those tasks completed first.

Communication When speaking with someone you are angry with, use an “I” message. EXPLAIN rather than ACCUSE EXAMPLE

“I” message template I feel ___________________________________ (be specific) When you _______________________________________ (give details of the behavior or circumstances) Because _______________________________________ (this is the hard one: the "why")

Emotions and the ANS 1.Get into pairs. (1 experimenter, 1 subject) 2.Create data sheet (1-10, 15 & 20) 3.Take pulse of subject. 3 mins: base rate 3 mins: arousal period (writing) 4 mins: recovery period 15 & 20: final base rate

Polygraph Article

Exit Ticket Create an emotional “resolution” 1. Write the name of an emotion that you struggle with managing. 2. What step (or steps) are you willing to take to better manage that emotion?
