It’s wonderful how much money I will save by using iChat instead of talking on the phone! This morning I called my uncle Deepak in India and told him to get iChat, too. He was given a laptop a couple of years ago as a present, but he doesn’t know very much about computers. Do you know what he asked me? 9 Jill: Karen! It’s so great to see you! Karen: Jill! How long has it been since we last saw each other? Jill: Ten years, by my count. Isn’t that awful? Did you get my New Year card? Karen: I did. Did you get mine? Jill: Yes, the pictures of your little girl were adorable. And I loved your letter. Karen: I hate sending those “form letters” to everyone, but it seems like that’s all I have time for anymore. Jill: I know just what you mean. Between work and home it seems like I never have five minutes to sit down and call someone, let alone write a letter. Karen: If it weren’t for my cell phone, I’d never call anyone. 16 Man:I’m the dean of a small college in Arizona. I think when e-mail first came out, there was a lot of miscommunication. But I don’t think that’s true anymore. There are so many ways to be clear in an e-mail. These days, e-mail and text messages have their own communication cues, you know? Like, if you use all-caps, people know that you’re shouting. And if you use emoticons, people know you’re joking. And you can use quotes and italics. I know my co-workers really well, so I can always tell when they’re joking in an e-mail, or being serious. All the people on my staff communicate by e-mail, and we never have problems. Back Next Page Woman: I’m a freshman at the University of Oregon, and I’m taking a world history course. I love my professor, but we had a bad misunderstanding last week. I posted a comment on the campus message board; all I wrote was, “Professor Greenfield’s lectures are sooo interesting.” I used my real name in the post, because I was being serious. But Professor Greenfield saw it and thought I was being sarcastic. He wrote me an e-mail and asked me what I didn’t like about his lectures, and I realized that he really misunderstood my post. I wrote him back right away and said I’d been serious, and wasn’t being sarcastic at all! But it really showed me that I have to be careful how I write my posts in the future! Previous Page

20 Today we’ll talk about something that may help you live a good life: Staying in touch with people. By staying in touch, when your friends need you, you’ll be there; and when you need them, they'll be there for you, too. Here are some useful tips for you to stay in touch, create deeper relationships with your friends, and keep a steady place in the lives of your friends no matter how far away you may be. First, find the time to stay in touch. We’re all busy. Super-busy, in fact. But in order to invest in your relationships, you have to make it a priority and make time for it, even though it doesn’t seem like a pressing need. Second, become the host. One thing that will make a huge difference in your ability to stay in touch is to become an event planner and host within your circle of friends. The more invitations you extend, the more you will get in return. Today we’ll talk about something that may help you live a good life: Staying in touch with people. 24 It is difficult to make money from social media. During their first few years in business, Facebook and Twitter lost a lot of money. Yet Tencent, an innovative Chinese firm that released the WeChat App in 2011, seems to have found a way out and is getting very successful. Tencent says now WeChat has 270 million active users, including tens of millions overseas. Starting off as a messaging service, WeChat has grown rapidly into much more. Not only does WebChat allow people to send messages to others without charge, the online- payment functions have been added into the App recently. And a wealth-management service has just been launched. Back Next Page The biggest unknown about WeChat is whether it can become a global hit like Twitter or Facebook. The reasons for optimism include its clever integration of the App with other money-making services and the spectacular growth in users both home and abroad. Yet some people point out that the App will lose one of its most attractive features outside China. WeChat usage exploded in part because it seamlessly integrates a user’s address book from Tencent’s QQ, an instant- messaging service that has over 800 million registered users. Considering there are fewer QQ users outside China, some people do have some doubts about the App going global. How do you think about it? Previous Page

37 D. After watching. VI. WATH AND TALK 1. Lena asks Hector to lie about his relationship with Lena. She says, “That way I won’t hurt his feelings.” Do you think it was all right for Lena to ask Hector to lie for that reason? Explain. I don’t think it was OK for Hector to agree to lie for Lena. It could hurt someone’s feelings and lead to bigger lies. X X

38 VI. WATH AND TALK 2.People sometimes tell “white lies” to avoid hurting others. For example, they may tell someone that their hair looks really good when they really think it is ugly. If someone asked you to tell a white lie would you do it? Yes _____ No _____ Give an example of a white lie that you or someone else told. Did the lie work? Did it make someone feel good instead of bad? I try never to tell lies. Lies always cause trouble. Once I told a friend that I was sick. I was actually going to a movie with a different friend. He saw me at the movies. He was hurt because I lied to him. X X Suggested Answer
