2 Progressivism Happened mainly from 1890 – 1920 Progressive people believed that the government should take a more active role in solving our nations problems. Progressive ’ s were usually urban, educated, middle class Americans. Most progressives were journalists, social workers, educators and politicians.

3 Muckrakers (DO NOT WRITE) Nickname for journalists who worked hard to try and expose corruption and scandal in America ’ s big businesses and in our government. Who were some prominent Muckrakers, and what stories did they write about?

4 Making the Government more efficient (DO NOT WRITE) Some people who favored progressivism wanted to make our government more efficient. They believed that many problems in our society could be solved if our government worked better.

5 “ Laboratory of Democracy ” (DO NOT WRITE) Robert La Follette used his position as governor to attack the way political parties ran their conventions. He pressured the state legislature to require each party to hold a direct primary.

6 The Suffrage Movement Although the movement for a Women ’ s right to vote actually began in 1848, it did not pick up a lot of steam until the late 1800 ’ s and early 1900 ’ s.

7 The 19 th Amendment In 1918, the 19 th amendment was brought up for vote, but did not pass. It failed by just two votes. It was brought up again in 1919, and on August 26 th, 1920, was passed. As of this day Women now have the right to vote in all states.

10 The campaign against Child Labor (DO NOT WRITE) In the year 1900, over 1.7 million children under the age of 16 worked outside the home. Many high school age children have jobs outside the home today, so what is the difference between now and in 1900?

11 Prohibition This is laws banning the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Many progressives believed alcohol was responsible for many problems in American life. The temperance movement advocated the moderation or elimination of alcohol.

12 Writing Assignment Choose a topic to write about. Make sure you RAP. At least 2 paragraphs long. 1. Is prohibition good or bad? 2. Should kids be allowed to work? Should there be limits on the amount of work they can do?
