1 Summary Writing Topic Sentence At least 3 supporting details Concluding Sentence

2 Read the entire article all the way through. Ask yourself, what is the BIG idea of the entire article? Try to write down the big idea in one sentence.

3 Find the Main Idea of Each Section MAIN IDEA: Who What Where When How

4 The main idea is not the small details. who, what, where, when, how can help you find the main idea

5 ACTIVE READING TIME Summarize and find the main idea of each section. Use a graphic organizer ~ ex. your hand summary or cluster circle chart ~ to establish the main idea of each section. Paraphrase each section’s main idea. Paraphrase means put the author’s ideas into your own words. Do not use more than 3-4 of the author’s words.

8 Long Article Summary Paragraph Introductory Sentence Body of the Paragraph Concluding Sentence

9 Introductory (Topic) Sentence The big idea of the article ~ include the article title and author in this sentence. You wrote this idea down after you read the article the first time. Ex: Amanda Rose Martinez's article Swirling Seas of Plastic Trash explores the impact that plastic trash has on the Earth.

10 Body of the Paragraph This should include the main ideas from each section of your article. You can use these ideas from your graphic organizers. These details are not always just who, what, where, when, and why These supporting details should be separate sentences and should support the main idea of the entire article.

11 Concluding Sentences These should wrap up the paragraph. The conclusion should restate the big idea. The conclusion can also include any connections that you might have to the article. Connections can be text to self, text to text, or text to world. We will be discussing these more in the next week.

12 Class Assignment This is a group assignment. Use your hand summary to discuss each section of the article. Write the main idea and supporting details in the cluster map ~ your supporting details may not be who, what where, when, why Write a summary paragraph of the article Upload it to edmodo
