3 ~The Explorer~ Christopher Columbus- 1492 The Plan: The Goal:
Based on the map in the previous slide. How did the Portuguese trading empire in the Indian Ocean affect the Spanish goals? The Goal: to find an alternate route to the Spice Islands. By sailing west to get east. Why does the map to the right support Columbus’s goal?

4 ~The Explorer~ Christopher Columbus- 1492 Arrival: His Findings:
October of 1492 after 37 days of sailing Columbus reached an island in the Caribbean. He believed he was in the East Indies. His Findings: Traveling throughout these islands he wrote meticulously in a journal he kept. Read entry from October 11, 1492

5 ~The Explorer~ Christopher Columbus- 1492 The Letter:
Columbus returns to Spain and writes a letter of his findings. Read Columbus Letter—written on board the Caravel, off the Canary Isles, on the 15th of February, 1493 Purpose/Significance What is the purpose of the letter and who is he writing it to? Writing to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella Purpose- inform them on his progress in the new world what he has found Why is this letter significant? Letter opens up the new world to Spanish conquest and domination.

6 ~The Conqueror~ Christopher Columbus- 1493-1500 Later Expeditions:
Columbus came back on his second voyage and forcibly subjugated the island of Hispaniola and enslaved the indigenous peoples. On each of his voyages he brought with him settlers for the new Spanish territories, along with agricultural seed and livestock.

7 ~Empires Converge?~ Portuguese Concerns: Treaty of Tordesillas-
Just like Columbus, Portugal believed he did in fact land in Asia. Their issue was they believed Columbus claimed land for Spain, that Portuguese sailors might have reached first Rivalry led to mounting tensions… Treaty of Tordesillas- Pope Alexander VI stepped in to keep peace between two nations. Also known as the line of demarcation…This line was agreed upon by the Spanish and Portuguese and divided the world into east and western portions.

Motives/Goals: Search to find route around Americas to get to the East Indies Outcomes: 1522 Magellan’s crew become the first people to circumnavigate the globe. Leads to Spanish giving up on East Indian Trade
