2 Think about any work or volunteer experience you have had:  Did you have to communicate with customers or colleagues?  Did you work on a computer during your work or volunteer experience?  Did you have to write down instructions or other information during your work experience or volunteer experience? All of these things require good communication skills. Why communication is important

3  To convey information  ex. Phone messages  Share ideas and/or opinions  Influence others  Listening carefully Reasons for Communication

4   Information is delivered or transmitted by the sender – the person who wishes to make the communication.   The person to who the information is transmitted to is called the “receiver.”   There must be a method of transmitting the information also referred to as a “medium” (plural media).   Some examples of media are voice, telephone, radio, television, newspapers, books, letters, and messengers.   Your voice was your medium when you asked your classmates to perform a simple task. 5  Internal Conditions  Status or background of a person can affect communication  Similar backgrounds  Anger and Fatigue  External Conditions  Noise makers: TV, Music etc. Conditions Interfering with Communication

6   Not just hearing the words and nodding your head but trying to understand the meaning intended by the sender   Having proper physical setting with few distractions as possible   Concentrating on what is being said rather than on how it is being said   Listening for ideas rather than facts   Paraphrase in your mind what is being said – be selective and listen for the main points Effective Listening

7   Communications between business and its customer   Examples: telephone calls, letters, ads, catalogues, and on location customer service   Poor communications = lost sales and decreased profits External Communications

8   In a large businesses, thousands of people work together to produce the goods and service that the business sells. To operate smoothly, clear and effective communications among the people working in the business is essential. Many businesses face a major problem when employees do not know what is expected of them. Internal Communications
