2 What is UCCCS? o Program housed at UC Davis o In Sacramento, one block from the Capitol o Application based program o You are placed in an internship in Sacramento o Take classes at the Center o Professional Experience in Public Policy & Journalism o UC system wide program o Open to all majors!

3 Policy Program o Quarter program offered fall, winter, spring and summer o Earn 14 quarter units Political Science 192: (10 units) Intern for about 24 hours a week Political Science 195: (4 units) California Policy Seminar Features guest lectures given by a variety participants in and observers of California politics and government o Optional 2 Unit course (for 16 units) Political Science 193: Supervised preparation of an extensive paper relating to your internship

4 Journalism Program o Summer only- UC Berkeley o 6 semester units (9 quarter units) – Journalism 298:(4 semester units) Intensive 2 week journalism “Boot Camp” – Journalism 197: (1-2 semester units) Intern 24-40 hours per week o Students gain the skills and techniques necessary to write insightful and provocative stories, with opportunities to publish their work. o Media credentials from the governor’s office and the Legislature o Internship placements tailored to students’ interest, skills and background, in media, print, online and radio

5 Am I eligible to apply? Eligibility o Junior or Senior standing o Sophomore with a B or better in upper divison courses o 3.0 or above GPA o All majors are encouraged to apply! Application o Application Form o Available Online o Resume o Unofficial Transcripts o Short personal essay (350 words) o Faculty Endorsement Form o Two References

Many UCCS Alumni are offered career positions when their time as an intern is complete.

7 Good things to know! o Your enrolled as a full- time student so you remain Financial Aid Eligible! o Lot’s of networking opportunities o Get to know other students from other UC’s o Small class size o Attend class twice a week o Private events o Tuition varies based on need but is close to what you’re paying for being on campus

8 About the Center  The Center is located one block from the State Capitol on the corner of 12 th and K street in Downtown Sacramento  Weekly talks and other events take place at the center  Gym  Lounge room  Conference rooms  Classroom  Student Lab

9 The Center Students take classes at the Center twice a week

10 Student Lounge Students can relax, socialize, eat lunch or study in the student lounge with cable TV!

11 Computer lab Computers, printers, copiers and a fax machine are available to students to work on assignments or just go online.

12 Gym Students have access to a gym!

13 How do I get my internship? o Fill out application and submit to your campus representative o Once accepted, you will receive an email from Associate Director A.G. Block o A.G. will discuss opportunities with you give you options and place you in your internship o Learn more about the process and what to expect in your internship by going to the internship page on our website.

15 Internship Venues The Legislature: Where public policy is made ▪Students interning with the Legislature are placed in the Capitol offices of individual senators or Assembly members, or with legislative committees. The administration: Where public policy is implemented or practiced ▪An administrative internship may be with a constitutional officer, state agency, department, board or commission that implements policy related to a student’s interests. Non-governmental organizations: Where public policy is influenced ▪Non-governmental organizations, or NGOs, are non-profits, professional associations, business and labor organizations that attempt to influence government on a wide range of policy issues.

16 Housing, Transportation, and other Logistics… UCCS does not have any housing. Students generally tend to: o Continue their current living situation if they currently reside in or around the Sacramento area. o If you need help securing housing please contact Tien Yancy o If you have friends or relatives in Sacramento you can stay with them. o Take public transportation (Yolo Bus & RT) OR drive and pay monthly parking o Carpool to Sacramento

17 Program Cost UC tuition and fees vary by campus To enroll in UCCS, you will need to enroll and pay tuition at UC Davis. Your tuition cost should be close to what you are paying on your home campus Please note that the estimates are listed by Books, Basic Living and Personal Expenses and Transportation. Actual cost will vary on your situation. Tuition fee’s are subject to change. ▪ UCCS/UCD’s- Quarterly Tuition $ 4,845* Health Insurance - $618 Program Fee- $167 Books - $540 Basic Living- $3,251 Personal Expenses-$1,260 Transportation-$ 898 TOTAL: $ 10,961 * Excludes Health Insurance
