What Is Energy? Ch. 8 Lesson 1

How Are Energy, Work, and Power Related?

Power The rate at which work is done Work When you work on an object, some of your energy is transferred to that object Energy The ability to do work or cause change

SO! Since the transfer of energy is work, then power is the rate at which energy is transferred, or the amount of energy transferred in a unit of time.

Energy: The ability to do work or cause change. Energy is measured in joules

Two types of energy: 1.Kinetic Energy 2. Potential Energy

Kinetic Energy Kinetic Energy is the energy of movement. It depends on an objects speed, which is how fast the object is moving, and its mass.

Examples:

Calculating Kinetic Energy

Potential Energy: Potential Energy is stored energy. An object with potential energy has the ability to move or change.

Examples of Potential Energy:

Gravitational Potential Energy Gravitational Potential energy is the potential energy related to an object’s height.

Example: A book has a weight of 20 newtons. If the book is lifted 2 meters off the ground, what is the gravitational potential energy?

Elastic Potential Energy Elastic potential energy is the energy associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched.

When the trampoline is stretched the most, it has the ____________ elastic potential energy. When the trampoline is NOT stretched at all it has _______ elastic potential energy.
