The Christian Life Our Goal {181} We want to look at both aspects of our faith: doctrine and experience. Not only to understand these themes better but also to have been enriched as far as Christian experience is concerned. One focus: the One in whom “we live, and move, and have our being.”

The Christian Life Lesson 13, June 27 The Christian Life Lesson 13, June 27

MISSION Key Text 1 Peter 3:15 NIV “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”

MISSION Initial Words {338} Mission is the heart of the church. The destiny of people, far and near, is at stake. Mission is not one among many programs of the church. It is the very reason for its existence. Each Christian is called to be a missionary.

MISSION Quick Look 1. Importance of Missions (Mark 16:15, 16) 2. The Need for Missions (Revelation 14:6-12) 3. Your Role in Missions (1 Corinthians 12:28)

MISSION 1. Importance of Missions Mark 16:15, 16 NIV “He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.’ ”

1.Importance of Missions The Great Commission {341} The gospel is to be preached “to all nations.” When the New Testament speaks about “nations,” it uses a word that would be more correctly translated as groups or “ethnic groups.” Our work therefore, is not completed until all people groups have been reached. Several thousand of these people groups have not yet been reached.

1.Importance of Missions The Great Commission {339} John 3:16 speaks about the love of God, which found expression in the sending of His Son to this earth. It promises eternal life to all who believe in Him. But it also clearly points to the alternative. Those who do not listen to the gospel call and refuse to accept Christ will perish.

MISSION 2. The Need for Missions Revelation 14:6-12 NIV “Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on earth…. A second angel followed…. A third angel followed them…. This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God’s commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.”

2. The Need for Missions A Witnessing Church {343} “The Angels are represented as flying in the midst of heaven, proclaiming to the world a message of warning, and having a direct bearing upon the people living in the last days of this earth’s history. No one hears the voice of these angels, for they are a symbol representing the people of God….” Life Sketches 429

2. The Need for Missions A Witnessing Church {343} We find in the opening statement of the three angels’ message a strong emphasis on the challenge to take the gospel to every person on earth. A great danger that we face is the shifting from the missionary mode to the maintenance mode and focus on protecting and sustaining our own institutions. Then we are losing the reason for our existence.

1 Corinthians 12:28 NIV “And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those who are able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.” MISSION 3. Your Role in Missions

Personal Witness {345} The church must be mission minded. But who is the church? The church is not primarily an organization; rather, it is individuals who are, without any exception, called to be witnesses. Not all have the gift of preaching or teaching. But all have been gifted in some way to be disciples always prepared to talk about the hope that is ours.

You cannot give what you do not have. Unless we make sure that we have a living relationship with God, we cannot hope to lead others to that same experience. Individually and corporately we must be “growing in grace” if our witnessing truly is to be productive. 3. Your Role in Missions Personal Witness {345}

MISSION Final Words {349} “The church is God’s appointed agency for the salvation of men. It was organized for service, and its mission is to carry the gospel to the world. … The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the church will eventually be made manifest … the final display of the love of God.” The Acts of the Apostles 9

The Christian Life Conclusion {347} “The stress on the importance of sound doctrine must be complemented with the unconditional determination to anchor all we say on Jesus Christ. If there is no connection with Jesus Christ, a doctrine will be no more than a piece of technical information, which may be interesting and intellectually challenging,

The Christian Life Conclusion {347} but nothing more. But if rooted in Jesus Christ, a doctrine will help us better understand the plan of redemption and will enhance our relationship with our Lord.
