The Teachings of Jesus Our Goal Let us pray for spiritual discernment to understand His message and to grasp His unfathomable love manifested on the cross. And as we hear His tender voice calling us to follow Him, let us renew our commitment to walk daily with Him by faith and in obedience.

The Teachings of Jesus Lesson 9, August 30 The Teachings of Jesus Lesson 9, August 30 Our Mission

Key Text Matthew 24:14 NKJV “ ‘ And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.’ ”

Our Mission Initial Words During the 40 days after His resurrection, Christ appeared several times to His disciples (1 Cor. 15:3–8), and He placed the responsibility of preaching the gospel in their hands (Acts 1:2, 3). The gospel writers provided us with valuable insight into its purpose, methodology, and scope.

Our Mission Quick Look 1. To Light the World (Matthew 5:14-16) 2. To Make Disciples (Matthew 28:19, 20) 3. To Preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15, 16)

Our Mission 1. To Light the World Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV “ ‘ You are the light of the world.... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.’ ”

1. To Light the World Children of Light Throughout the Bible, light is intimately associated with God. God is the Source of light. Scripture frequently uses light to symbolize truth, knowledge, and godliness. Light stands for God; darkness, for Satan.

1. To Light the World Children of Light Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, is “ ‘the light of men,...the true Light which gives light to every man’ ” (John 1:4, 9, NKJV). Through Him we may have the “light of the knowledge of the glory of God” (2 Cor. 4:6); that is, His character.

1. To Light the World Children of Light When we accept Christ as our Savior, we become “ ‘sons of light’ ” (John 12:36, NKJV). But we have no light in ourselves. Like the moon, all we can do is reflect the light. When we let Jesus shine through us, we will not do good works to parade our own virtue but to lead people to glorify God.

1. To Light the World Be Witnesses The believers’ testimony could have convincing power only through the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling in their hearts. After receiving the Spirit, the apostles were able to speak, openly and with great power, about what they themselves had witnessed and experienced.

Our Mission 2. To Make Disciples Matthew 28:19, 20 NKJV “ ‘ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you....’ ”

2. To Make Disciples So Send I You Sending involves a purpose, since one is sent with a mission to fulfill. Jesus was sent by the Father to save the world, and we are sent by Jesus to proclaim salvation through Him. Evidently, our commission is a continuation of Christ’s work, which consisted of a complete ministry to all people.

2. To Make Disciples So Send I You Jesus provided the Holy Spirit to enable the disciples to carry out their mission. The same anointing is indispensable today to fulfill the commission entrusted to us.

2. To Make Disciples So Send I You In giving the Great Commission, Jesus used four verbs: go, make disciples, baptize, and teach. in Greek, the only verb that is imperative is make disciples, while the other three verbs are participles. The emphasis of the sentence is on make disciples, the other three activities being dependent on it.

2. To Make Disciples So Send I You The three activities involved in making disciples do not need to occur in a particularly sequential order; rather, they complement each other. Baptism is just part of making someone a disciple. Our task is to invite people to follow Jesus: believe Him, obey His teachings, adopt His way of life, and invite others to become disciples too.

Our Mission 3. To Preach the Gospel Mark 16:15, 16 NKJV “ ‘ Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.’ ”

3. To Preach the Gospel A Must As in Matthew, the verb go in Greek is a participle that indicates the movement needed to fulfill the task. The mission itself is expressed by the Greek verb Kerusso, given here in the imperative mood. Kerusso means “to proclaim aloud, to announce, to preach.” The church must proclaim the gospel.

3. To Preach the Gospel A Must Preaching the gospel to every creature, however, doesn’t automatically mean that all will accept it. Only “ ‘he who believes and is baptized will be saved’ ” (Mark 16:16, NKJV). We should preach eagerly, hoping that every hearer will yield to the gospel invitation.

Our Mission Final Words “The Saviour’s commission...includes all believers in Christ to the end of time. It is a fatal mistake to suppose that the work of saving souls depends alone on the ordained minister.... All who receive the life of Christ are ordained to work for the salvation of their fellow men. For this work the church was established....” (DA 822)
