3 Route (continued) This is Cartier’s route that he took to try and find the Northwest Passage.

4 Background Before an explorer Cartier was a sailor and navigator.

6 Motives Jacques Cartier was sent to find the Northwest passage. 7 Dates In 1534 King Francis sent Jacques Cartier to find the Northwest Passage. Cartier sailed west to Canada, he entered a large gulf and he claims large land for France. Before heading back to France he found a waterway leading to the West.

8 Dates In 1535 Kind Francis sent Cartier back to map the waterway. Cartier reached its mouth on the Catholic feast day St. Lawrence, so Cartier named the river The St. Lawrence River. With American Indian guides he sailed as far as present day Quebec until his ship could go no further he visited an American Indian village and brought some of its Chiefs back to France. They told the king there was great riches farther west.

9 Dates In 1541, the French king sent Cartier and some settlers on a third voyage to set up a French empire in North America. Cartier took more than 100 settlers. After and during a harsh winter Cartier and the settlers gave up.

10 Dates In 1542, they returned to France still Cartier had staked France’s claim in North America.

11 Impact 60 yeas later New France (their claimed land) had its first permanent settlers.
