3  Strategic Arms Limitation Talks  Agreement to stop all usage or construction of long range missile launchers on both sides (U.S. and Soviets)  Nixon and General Secretary Brezhnev signed a treaty which was a temporary agreement not to use strategic firearms on May 26 th, 1972  www.coldwar.org

4  Strategic Arms Limitation Talks II had pretty much the same idea as SALT I.  The difference was that instead of having a temporary stop on the usage of the long range missile launchers they wanted to make it permanent.  The treaty was signed by President Carter and General Secretary Brezhnev in Vienna on June 18, 1979  www.coldwar.org

6  February 11 th, 1977 Mengistu Haile Mariam became the leader of the military in Ethiopia.  Somalia's leader knew there were problems with Ethiopia's military so they attacked.  With double the forces Somalia took over The Ogaden.  North Korea, Cuba, and the Soviet Union saw this as a threat so they helped Ethiopia get The Ogaden back.  www.coldwar.org,http://www.onwar.co m

7  President Nixon signed a cease fire agreement.  With out help from the U.S. the Saigon government could not stop the north  Americans got evacuated and Vietnamese tried to leave  http://www.nytimes.com

9 Afghan War It started in 1972 and ended in 1992 Initially involved an estimated 30,000 troops, a force that ultimately grew to 100,000. They received aid from the United States, China, and Saudi Arabia. To battle the Soviets.

11  Towards the end of the Vietnamese war there was an increase in Vietnamese children being adopted.  Gerald Ford had allocated 2 million dollars for 30 flights to Vietnam to pick up orphan baby’s.  On of the first flights had had a problem and wreck there were 330 people and baby’s aboard and 174 baby’s were killed in the crash.

12  As president, Carter created two new cabinet-level departments: the department of energy and the department of education He established a national energy policy that included conservation, price decontrol, and new technology. Foreign oil imports were reduced by 50% from 1977 to 1982. n foreign affairs, Carter pursued the camp david accords the panama canal treaties. and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.
